Do I have to notify my insurance company if I install a turbocharger on my car?

This summer I was thinking of putting some money towards a turbo kit for my car. Would I have to notify the insurance company by doing so? I live in Ontario, Canada, so please provide some sort of proof based on experience and not just assumption.

You should definitely notify your insurance company. Sure, your insurance rates might go up a bit, but it is worth it in the long run. Like the other answerer said, if you go out and get in an accident (without have telling your insurance company about the turbo charger), you will likely have criminal charges against you. You will then have to pay up to your ears for a lawyer. In the end, it is just not telling them. |

Yes, it is considered a Material Change in Risk, the insurance company may or may not have written the coverage for the vehicle or charged an additional premium because of this.
So if you were say in an accident, and they had the vehicle inspected found the turbo, they could and would deny coverage for your vehicle and any other damages you would have cause.
The rate increase you may have won't be worth the potential problems you could face.
But in the end it is your decision, and you may or may not every have a problem.
But that is what insurance is right, you pay for it hoping you never need it, but are happy it is there when you do |

all insurance companies require ANy alterations and modifications to be brought to their attention BEFORE you drive the vehicle.
this is to allow for correct risk assessment and fee applications etc.
failure to do so invalidates any insurance cover immediately. many don't tell the company and when the get into an accident find out too late its always far cheaper ( and avoids court appearances with possible internment) to pay the premiums asked and be totally honest. |

Interesting question.
Here is something to consider.
You don't tell them. You go out and get in a wreck (your fault) speed may or may not be a consideration. You get sued, criminal charges, etc.
The law enforcement agencies and other insurance company look at your wrecked car and see the aftermarket turbo under the hood. That will be used against you in court. Count on it. You company might even have grounds to limit or even drop it's coverage. I don't know how insurance laws work in Ontario.
I'm not saying don't do it. I am just saying how this these things can turn into a real nightmare.
