Do I have to pay auto insurance if I'm not driving?

I got into a bad accident a few weeks back and my car got totalled. I pay for full coverage insurance each months, $187 through USA. I thought they would stop billing until I got blue book value from the other guy who hit me's insurance. I called up there and the woman who answered my question is still in " training ", so I don't quite know if she is right. She told me to go up there and personally cancel my insurance completely. If I did that wouldn't I have to start back at level one? It took me over a year to lower my insurance from $210 to $187. Isn't there a way I can pay bare minimum and still receive insurance?

Since you have full coverage, you are covered for a rental car, a friend's car (if it is insured), a replacement car or whatever.

Few people stop driving all together when their car gets wrecked, so you are required to continue paying for ins.

If you stop paying and get canceled, it will cost you MORE when you someday reinstate your coverage. BEST idea is to keep paying if you plan to drive again soon.

If you are no longer driving then the answer is NO. You don't have to pay any car insurance if you don't have any vehicle to insure.

I think what the insurance agent (trainee) was trying to tell you is that in order to save you money she is suggesting that you continue your insurance payment so that when you decide to purchase another car you can just tell your insurance to add your new car and you wouldn't have to worry about paying a large down payment.

Now if you think you are paying too much for your insurance consider shopping around to compare several different rates from various insurance companies. You can go online to do this or you can call them.

Every vehicle that has a valid registration will need some kind of insurance. If you have a newer car you will need full coverage, if you have a older car, you can get away with just liability insurance. Each state has limits on what they call minimum, you will need to verify what those limits are, usually 15/10/30 for full coverage.
