Look at the Mass DMV website. I am about to buy a used car in California and they require that buyers transfer registration within 5 days of the transaction. They have to see your bill of sale and title to do this, so they know what day the vehicle was purchased!!! |

Contact the DMV for your home state. The time limit in my state is 15 days before you are penalized. |

Well, this is a state specific question. Most state you have 30 days to register a vehicle after purchase. Even Used. Once you sign the title or bill of sale you have 30 days to register your vehicle. However this is a motorcycle and each state has a different rule on those. I do believe the time line is about the same though.
Hope that Helps,

Each state has its own rules as to the amount of time you have before you need to change ownership without paying penalties. Oklahoma is 30 days, Texas is 20 days. California is 30 I think.
They give the rules for Mass, but don't say how long you have to do it.
You need a completed RV-1 form, which you will obtain from your auto insurance company or agent. Private sales require a title or bill of sale from the previous owner of the vehicle. After completing these transactions, you will receive a registration certificate, plates and a decal for the rear plate. You must obtain a vehicle inspection sticker within seven days of the registration date. To have your motorcycle inspected, you need to find an inspection station that accepts motorcycles. The inspection sticker will be affixed directly to the license plate. |

Once the bike changed hands, the previous registration is no longer valid. If the previous owner left the plates on the bike, that was his mistake. You need to register the bike in your own name before you may ride it. There is no "grace period" for this -- if you ride the bike without registering it, you are breaking the law. |
