Do I need an MOT certificate to get an MOT test?

Hello all,

I forgot to get my MOT test in June (naughty me, I know). It has only come to my attention since the road tax disk is up for renewel in a few days.

When I called the garage to book an MOT, the guy said 'please bring your logbook and MOT certificate, it'll make it easier'. Do they need an MOT certificate? (Since obviously mine is now a few months out of date).

Take the old one with you along with your log book, it is easier to get serial numbers chassis numbers etc from the old mot form.

No, and they don't actually need your log book either all you need to present your car for an mot test is ..... the car
All the details which are needed for the computerised mot test are on the car.

No need to worry, you dont need one. Ive done the same myself when my car was off the road.

No, they request it to make it easier to do their paper work, just take the vehicle ownership certificate issued by the DVSS

no, you dont need an old mot cert, its just the mot tester being lazy. ie... he copies all your cars details chassis number etc from your old certificate coz he cant be bothered to find them on your car. tell him you cant find them but be careful how u tell him(dont forget he's the one that says pass or fail)

No, you don't need it. There is this in the rules, though:

If the vehicle is presented for test within the calendar month prior to the date that the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate for example if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2003, and the vehicle was presented on or after 2 March 2003, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2004.

To have this extension, the vehicle owner should present their old certificate to the test station to verify that the extra time is applicable.

of course not, thats the whole point of having one done, many used cars when first bought might not have one, you are only allowed to drive it on the way to an mot test appointment though and you have to prove it if you get pulled over
