Your mother's insurance company MUST be told that you need to drive the car as a provisional driver, and that your mother will be teaching you. They may, or may not approve this, and they may impose extra premium costs on your mother in order to do this.

You absolutely MUST get the insurance company approval. The 'material risk' has changed with your driving of the vehicle, and the insurance company must be told, and must approve of this.

You need to be a named driver on the insurance policy, or for the policy to cover any driver.

Yes you do need insurance

Yes. You need to be a 'named' driver on her policy and she can take you out as long as she has been driving over 3 years.
Some companys dont charge anything for named drivers but you must make sure she states you only have a provisional licence as they charge for this

yes you must have insurance to drive

You insure cars, not people. but once you get a license you need to be added to the policy

Mike Hunt
No as long as she has full coverage and you have a valid learner's permit. Unless her policy specifically excludes you... you will be covered.

Please make sure you get your Mum to check with her Insurance company before you take to the wheel. You may well, be covered, if not she will have to pay extra an premium in order that you are, which is essential.

Good Luck with your lessons, do hope you enjoy this new experience.

yes you will, even if your mum is fully comprehensive it will only cover over 25's third party. I assume you are under 25 so will need to be named on your mum's policy, this way you will have the same cover as her. BUT it will cost her more.

Good luck with the lessons, hopefully you won't need to use the insurance

CR
Yeah, I think she should put you on her policy just in case.

You need insurance to do ANYTHING with your mother

Have your mum to ring the insurance company and ask - its the only way to solve the answer, between the yes's and no's above.

Her policy will cover you. If you live with your mother, she will have to have you listed on the policy before you can drive it.

?
you need to be added to your mums policy as an named driver

you would need to be a named driver on the insurance policy for the vehicle you are driving, as it is the driver of the vehicle who must have a minimum of third party insurance (whether they hold provisional or full licence) and declare as only holding a provisional licence to insurance company. Also then anyone over 21 with a full licence for over 3 years can sit next to you. (I have a 'group 17' car and only paid an addition £50 to add my wife as learner)

Chris
No, you're covered by the policy on the car, so long as you're driving with her permission. Once you get licensed though, she'll need to add you as a driver to the policy.

is she teaching you?
no as long as she is in the car and gives you permission to drive its fine.
