I'm buying a car - used, private sale. More accurately my parents are buying it for me. I live about 400km away from my parents at the moment.
- I have a G1 (working on my g2) so I can't get insurance on my own right now.
- We asked if I could get insurance with my dad but he would have to own the car (which would mean he'd have to take the 8263817623 hour trip up here just to sign the papers)
- We asked if we could insure it temporarily with my boyfriend since he has a full G license
-> I wouldn't be able to be insured with him since he's had it less than 4 years
-> For normal full term insurance with just him would cost an arm a leg and our souls plus he would have to own the car
-> No one does temporary insurance unless we're already with the company
- The MTO website says that you need to register the car within 6 days of buying it and you need to present proof of insurance when you register if you're putting the plates on the car. (Does this mean if I don't put plates I can register without insurance?)
- when the car is purchased, the date of sale goes on the transfer application so I'd really like to adhere to the law if possible

I don't know what the hell happened, I don't even know what they mean by "carrier inquiries". either way waste of time.
I've tried about everything I can think of except going to the vehicle licensing place and asking someone there.
So I need a straight answer if anyone knows it. Do I really need insurance to register a car in Ontario?

You only need insurance if you plan to plate the vehicle. To register the vehicle in your name you do not need insurance (or even a driver's license for that matter). However unless you make arrangements with the seller to keep the vehicle at their place you'll have to have the vehicle towed to your place. I do know of one insurance company that will rate a G1 driver as the principal operator of a vehicle in Ontario. They will do it if there is no other driver in the household who has had a valid license for 4 years that can act as the accompanying driver. The company is Perth Insurance. You can contact Perth at the link below to find a broker near you. You may not like their rates, but there's no real alternative until you get your G2. |
