Do I need to be on my parents insurance in order to drive their cars, even if i have my own insurance?

Do I need to be on my parents insurance in order to drive their cars, even if i have my own insurance?

My parents attorney told them that because of our situation (my parents owning more than one home) that I NEED to get my own insurance vs. just being added to their policy. I havent gone out to buy a car yet because I'm not too certain of what I want but in the mean time I wanted to know if I would be able to drive their cars, even if it was just to and from school and work.

Absolutely. If you're a high-school or college student and are financially dependent upon your parents, then you qualify under the definition of an "insured" since you are a family member who lives in the household. This means you are covered as an insured under their policy for any vehicle they own. If you're an adult not living at home, then you'd be covered as a permissive driver. Any person with your parent's permission to drive the vehicles is fully insured, be it the neighbor, a friend or any other person they choose to let drive the vehicle.

As a side note, your parent's attorney is being unnecessarily cautious about the insurance. He's worried about you getting into a serious accident. Your parents should consider purchasing an umbrella policy to provide additional asset protection. A good indepdent agent will be able to help them settle on an umbrella policy that would adequately protect their assets.

If you are fully insured for a Ford Focus and your parents drive someting like brand New Landcruisers, you might wanna check to see how much the Cruiser's are covered when you're behind the wheel in the unfortunate event you are resposible for a total loss...

The attorney meant that you have to get your own insurance on YOUR car when you buy it and title it in your name. The car you drive is what is insured, not you personally!

And yes, they should list you on their insurance in case you may be driving one of their vehicles anywhere.

Good luck.

Guess Who
I think it all depends on the insurance company. When I was 16 I was on my parents policy when I turned 18 I still was but when I bought my car they said I could still be on their policy cause we was checking with them to see what my insurance would cost us. Well... after I bought my car they gave me x amount of hours to get my own policy which was going from 50.00 a month to over 200.00 a month. So we pulled our insurance from them and went some place else. for around 60.00 a month with my own policy. I was able to drive anyones vehicle as long as I had insurance but there are differences in companies and policies so you'd have to check to be sure... I can't really say for sure... I'd just call and chek with your insurance agent vs your parents attorney....

If you are under the age of consent (usually 18) and live with your parent(s) you should be on their policy, yes.

Added: Jim, I'd suggest you just watch a while instead of answering when you obviously don't know. Insurance goes with the car, not the driver. If someone is driving your car with your permission and has a wreck, it will be your insurance that pays for the wreck, not his. Ask any agent, or law enforcement officer if you think otherwise.

I think that attorney is wrong, ask for another opinion. Basically, if you still live with your parents and you cause an accident - the people you injury can sue you AND your parents for their damages.

But, yes. If you want to drive their cars - you still need to be addred.

No !
and if you had an accident while driving their car, your insurance would pay for it, not their's.
Sound's too me someone's making up a story so you won't drive their cars.
Number of house's have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Oklatom, may think he know's what he's talking about, but really doesn't.
For example: when you rent a car(exp: hertz), you do not need to purchase the auto insurance, because the auto insurance you have on your personel car does and will carry over to the rented car.
Also,,,,,new law,,,,,if the car is in your name it has to have insurance in your name.
Sorry okla,,,,stick to being a prison guard and stop acting like you know the LAW.
