I am living in campus, and I will buy a car soon. I don't have auto insurance right now. Do I need to buy insurance before I buy a car?

No, of course not. You buy the car, take the paperwork to your broker, get the insurance, go get your plates, go back and get the keys and drive. You can't buy an insurance policy for "some car", "2 or 4 doors", "some kind of engine", made by "some company". In Manitoba you can buy a 7-day sticker from the dealer which gives you temporary registration and insurance, to allow you to drive it home and arrange for plates and full insurance on your own time. |

you need insurance for the second you get in the car and actually drive it. |

Depends on where you live. In Texas, the dealership is required to see proof of insurance from you before you drive the car off the lot. |

If you plan on financing it you do. If you are paying cash, they don't really care. I know been on both sides of the fence here. As long as they had the cash, they didn't care if I ran it into a fence post as long as I was off the lot. When they finance it, they want to see the paper work with the VIN number on the insurance, before they let go of the keys.
They may give you some leeway if you are a returning customer that has bought several cars from them. |

If you are financing it, yes. The bank will require it and they'll ask for it. If you buy it outright, you may have to depending upon how your state does temporary licence tags. If your state requires proof of insurance in order to register a car, you will have to provide proof to the dealership so they can put a temp tag on it. If your state does not issue temp tags, then you can just buy it. Again, depending upon your state, you have a certain amount of time before you MUST notify your current insurance company (if you have one) that you bought a new car. In Ohio, you're technically covered up to 30 days under terms of your current policy when you buy a new car. |

You do not need insurance to BUY a car - But you do need it to DRIVE the car (even drive it home from the car lot). Most places will not SELL you a car (I'm talking financing here) if you don't buy or already have "full coverage" insurance. If you are buying a cheaper, used car....get only the insurance you have to have by law. Safe-Auto, Geico, The General, and a few others offer some pretty swell deals on minimum coverage. TIP: Insurance is CHEAPER on a 4-door car than on a 2-door. Call a few places and tell them the make of the car you are interested in - Get a basic quote. When you BUY the car, call them immediately and give them the VIN Number (VIN = Vehicle Identification Number), and they will "cover you" on the spot - Pay later! |

Of course you can't even register it without proof of insurance |

There are two options. Once you have a car in mind, get the VIN number from the dealership and then insure that car. Your car insurance company may want you to bring the car straight from the dealership for inspection. If you end up buying a different car, you can just switch it over, but you will still have insurance.
Other option is to purchase temporary insurance from the dealership until you can get your own (usually 3-4 days) or they may be able to set you up with a company right there. |

Only if you want to drive it home .
You can not operate a vehicle on the roads without insurance .
If you are financing , the lender will insist on insurance.
But if you are buying it with cash and someone else will be driving , you do not have to get it.
Of course , if it is stolen . . . you will be out 100 % . |

You need it when you buy the car to take it home...once you pick out a car then do a quote either online or by calling, I recommend geico.com or 800-841-3000 get the quote and the insurance all within about 15 minutes and fax everything to the dealer, so you can wait until the deal goes thru for sure....but if you want to check out the rates first they will do that to as long as you know what kind of car u are buying...good luck |
