Yes, you absolutely need to be insured to drive it - the best way to do this would be for you to be placed on your boyfriend's policy as a named driver (insurance company must be informed that you are a learner - ie that you hold a provisional licence, not a full one). Then you can drive your boyfriend's van, but you must have a valid provisional driving licence, always display L plates, and be accompanied by a driver over the age of 21 who has a full current UK driving licence, and has had for a minimum of 3 years. You must also not drive on any motorway if you are a learner. |

You say he has a van but do not tell us if it is for Business use.
If it is insured as Private and Business then unless you work for him you would need to be added as a named driver and they will want your licence details which is going to put the price of the insurace as you are obviously the higher liability.
