You only need insurance if the car is to be used on the road. However what happens if it's stolen - you won't be insured. Talk to insurance co, and ask if it can be covered for theft only until you get back then be fully covered. This will also mean you don't have to get SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice) from DVLA. |

If it's not on the road, you don't need to. |

In the uk you only need to ensure the car if you are using it - so locked in a garage it should be fine uninsured |

Legally, you only need insurance if you will drive the car on public roads,
However, I have often stored my car for months and I always buy comprehensive coverage for fire, theft or vandalism. It is not very costly (for me, it was $20 for 6 months). |

no because you're not going to use it |

Legally you don't need insurance while it's off the road. However, as already said, common sense dictates that you keep some form of cover, if only for fire & theft, in case something happens to it while you're away. Speak to some insurers, a lot of them have "lay up" insurance for exactly this purpose. |

Why not just buy the car when you come back. |

You don't need third party or comprehensive insurance. However... It's preferable to have Fire and theft cover otherwise you would have no comeback if it was stolen or burned out.
If the vehicle is not taxed YOU WILL need to declare SORN with DVLA otherwise you leave yourself open to a fine. |

You do if you have a loan. The finance company will take out some for it if you let it lapse. It will be expesive and added to your payments. if no loan, at least put comp on it in case something falls on it or something like that. Otherwise anything that happens to it will be your problem. Ask your insurance company what happens if the building falls on it. Anything could happen. It is only one month. |

i would at least get it for a month, because you do have to drive it home and if you've taken out a loan for it the banks will more than likely require you to insure it or they may just add insurance to your payments. for your last question i would call your insurance person to find out if you would be insured if it just sits in your garage while your away... |

If the car is registered, than it needs to be insured. Like gear head mentioned, you can suspend the liability and collision coverages while you are abroad. If something happens to the car while you are gone it's covered under comprehensive and you won't have a lapse of insurance when you get back. Lapses are a red flag to insurance companies and will make your rate higher. |
