They can give you a quote based on information supplied but some insurers might want you to bring the car in at some point so they can take a couple of photos of it. I've never had to do that, however. When you add a car to a policy you just give the information, and I have done this over the phone and you give them information like the VIN# and other specifics (Year, make and model, how many miles on it, yada yada, and you are usually covered immediately.) In the vast majority of cases it can all be done either over the phone, by mail, or from a web site. The VIN# is really the main piece of information they need.

The reason they don't really need to see it when you sign up for a policy is that they want to get your money as soon as possible and want to make it as easy as they can to get a check out of you. One the other end, if you ever have a claim, then you can bet they will want to see it and investigate the whole thing like there is no tomorrow, take pictures left and right, up and down, get police reports, and if they find out then you have lied about anything they can toss your claim right out the window. So they get you on the back end, not the front.

No the insurer doesn't need to see the car. The only exception is if it is a classic car with a high insured value - then they will want photographs of the car to prove it's value xxx

No. You can insurer your car online with out leaving your house.

you really dont have a clue do you? you just do it all over the phone or the web. but be warned, if you lie about any modifications, alloy wheels etc and you have an accident, you wont get a bean!

Normally not but if the insurer asks to see the vehicle then you'll have to bring it in for inspection. It doesn't happen often, but it is not unheard of.
