Do particular colours of car tend to have more accidents?

and if so, is this taken into consideration by the insurers ? I have heard that red cars may have more crashes but my friend says its silver. Wouldbn't this be affected by the fact that there are more silver cars on the road than red ones ? So probably i wouyld be looking for the colour of car which has the most crashes which sells a fair amount of vehicles. ( so if you have crashed a pink car, i'm not interested i'm afraid )

I worked for an insurer and was told that green cars are more likely to be involved in accidents, it has something to do with our perception of the colour against backgrounds, especially country lanes where they are surrounded by green, I was never made aware that any premium was imposed upon green cars to make them more expensive to insure but you will never know unless you become an insurance underwriter yourself.

Think back to the application you filled out to get insurance, or just go on line and look at one of the many "We can save you" applications there. What do they ask? Make and model of the car, with the year and mileage. Where you park it. Your drving record. How you use it (business, pleasure, school) and things like that. NO PLACE on the application do you find "vehicle color" because they don't ask, they don't care. Why don't they care? Because it has no effect. Besides, what if you bought a red car, then had it painted green?

That being said, a lot of the 2 door sports type cars are red, and are bought by somewhat aggressive drivers, and do tend to be noticed by the police and perhaps you could make an argument that they get more tickets...

To relate a topcoat paint finish to probability of having an auto accident is ridiculous. This is an old urban legend and if there were any truth to it we would all be required to drive optic-orange colored cars with flashing lights on the roof. Only an idiot would consider this when purchasing a vehicle.

bigbro
the accident rate is in proportion to the amount of cars on the road, ie, more silver cars, they are more likely to be in an accident than say a gold one, mind you I had a yellow dolly sprint years ago that was hit 3 times in 8 weeks, the second time while it was still waiting for the repair from the1st one !! needless to say I got rid of it soon after the 3rd repair, and before anyone says anything, my wife was driving it the 1st time, and the other 2 times it was parked up, I think it had a bloody big magnet under the bonnet !!!!! never did find it though.
ps
yellow, red, black , white, brown, blue, gold, silver, she has managed to prang them all, gonna call her rainbow coz shes been through the spectrum !!

The colour of cars in most accidents is Red
The colour of cars in the least amount of accidents is Blue

Colour doesn't affect your insurance as these are based on unproven statistics. But, to be on the safe side I would recommend say get a blue car.

Metallic Black and Metallic Silver cars retain there value better so can be resold at a higher price then the same car of a different colour, and are not in as many accidents at red cars.

my dad wouldnt drive a red car for about 20 years cos he's only ever had 2 car accidents and they were both in red cars.

I have heard yellow cars have a few accidents but thats mainly because of the reflection of the sun on the car. To be honest its not really the car that crashes is it its just what colour car the idiots drive

gyalcee1
Your friend is correct about it being red cars. But this was reported about 10 years ago. At that time most vehicles were solid colours. Now the majority of cars are metallic in colour and i would say that red still is the car people do not see on the road.

notaclue
I'm not sure if there is a specific color however, I once owned a dark brown Toyota that I got rid of because I had more close calls than cotter has liver pills! I honestly believe all "dark" colored cars because of the inability to see them under certain light conditions and especially at night! (used to have people pull out dangerously close in front of me!)
I do know that insurance companies charge much higher rates for "red" vehicles due to the paint being so much more expensive than any other color.

Green or gold cars probably crash more because they are piloted by the old.

Probably, but is this because types of people - I'm thinking bad drivers here - go for certain colours?

I have a Friend who's mother offered to buy him a new car - but not a green one.

Green is supposed to be the unluckiest colour but, come on, you don't see many green cars do you? Silver is the new red as the most popular colour but I think black is supposed to be a bad colour as it's dark and the vehicle isn't always seen. I worked with someone who thought white was the best colour but there are not many white cars around either (this is UK)... If you are looking to buy a car I would go for a bronzey colour - brilliant for not showing the dirt!

Red cars have alot of accidents. It is because the brake lights are the same color as the car, making it more difficult to see. Black cars have alot of accidents also.

They two colors may have higher insurance cost.

In a recent study shown on the BBC Northern ireland website today, the colour crash index according to those most likely to have an accident from Churchill Motor Insurance shows a direct correlation between car colour and accident frequency, and black cars are twice as likely to be involved as cream cars.

1. Black
2. Silver
3. Green
4. Yellow
5. Blue
6. Grey
7. Red
8. Pink
9. White
10. Cream

I got a white car.

I don't think this can be proven. There are too many factors other than just color.

David
Without question GREEN so my insurer tells me.
I won't be buying another one

Rudebox77
Green or gold cars tend to have the most accidents.

Heather
yes and it's red cars, or so i've heard.

lsastar3
red cars get the most tickets, if they are sports models, they attract the most attention. grey/silver blends into the roadway, so are hard to see under certain conditions.

Silver cars tend to have more crashes as well as white ones due to the Sun reflecting off them more so that it is hard for other drivers to see them. Hope this helps

Yes, Red and Black painted cars had been known to be in more accidents than any other color. Color of the car is sometimes considered when getting insurance. A red or black car tend to go on a higher end rate especially if it is a sporty 2door vehicle. Silver cars are dime a dozen because it USED to be a status symbol color. But since everyone is driving a slver car these days, the scale may tip a little to the silver cars having more accidents. I personally think silver cars are dated now. I have a Capri Blue Metallic M-Class.
