I am an insurance broker and working with different companies, it depends on the insurance company you go with. In many cases we can insure you and it does not matter whom the car is registerd to.

I don't know what the laws are for other states, but here in NY, yes. The registration and insurance have to be in the same name. The title to the vehicle can be in another name, though.

No. Registration and insuring is two different things. But you do need both to drive legally.
