Hi. I will be turning 21on april 15th. In the state of Ohio, and probably all over the U.S you are issued a new vertical license on your 21st birthday. Is it possible to obtain this a day or so before your birthday? Or do you have to do it on the day of your birthday or after? Thanks!

it will prbably have my 21st birthday on it....so it wont "show" anything. Im not trying to weasel my way out of anything, i have to work on my birthday and i wont have a chance to get it. since im going to the bar that night, i was just wondering if i could get it the day before. I know i can use my old license, i was just wondering.

You can get your "Over 21" license right now. In Ohio, under 21 year-olds can renew their licenses 30 days before their 21st birthday.
It won't have your 21st birthday on it and have all the characteristics of an over 21 license. (Yellow header bar, horizontal orientation)
From the Ohio BMV:
"An Ohio driver's license and/or identification card may be renewed by a person within 30 days of their 21st birthday. A driver's license or identification issued within 30 days of an individual's 21st birthday will have the characteristics of a license or identification card issued to a person 21 years of age or older." |

In Ohio, you can get it renewed 30 days before your 21st birthday and have a horizontal license. But, if you're still under 21 when you get it renewed they put a red UNDER 21 until your birthday ( I know they changed the license stuff around because my friend has the old one and turned 21 a few months before me and her license doesn't say anything about being under 21 even though she got hers before her 21st) ... but other than that it's just a regular 21 license. |

Some states will allow you to go in prior to your 21st birthday & renew or upgrade your license. Ohio is one of those states.
Regardless of the type of license you have, the clerk or bartender is supposed to look at your birth date, not if the license is vertical, a different color or has the "Under 21" stamp on it before you purchase alcohol. Those are only to help a clerk or bartender spot an underage license quicker.
You can go to BMV Monday & get your new license. Also, you will have to surrender your old one. It is illegal to have more than one license in your possession.
