Do you know if State Farm is a good place to be insured?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you know if State Farm is a good place to be insured?

My insurance on my Jeep liberty is very high. My son who is 21 yrs old is on the policy. Can State Farm tell if I have been shopping around for other insurance by checking my credit rating? I have been insured with them for 7 yrs now.
Additional Details
I have my house and another chevy truck on the insurance. It is soooo expensive.

Even with a clear driving history, no tickets, no accidents, etc, State Farm rates were high compared to others.

They won't be able to tell that you're shopping around for better coverage.

We've found the best rates at American Family. Check to see if they offer coverage in your area. (They're even cheaper know that we have a teenage boy on our policy.)

I have been with State Farm for 30 years and has been fine for me.

Shop around though. They wouldn't know if you have looked at other providers.

State Farm is THE premium auto insurer in the U.S. Yes, the cost is usually higer than many other companies but when you really NEED claims coverage they have a claims force in place that truly boggles the mind. Of course you can be canceled, of course your rates can go up -- this is true of all companies, bar none. Just keep in mind that no matter where you have a loss, you can bet there is a State Farm agent nearby and claims personel that will assist you, i.e; vehicle repairs, rental car, hotel accomodations and in many cases will drive you to the airport in a pinch. One last point: hurricane Katrina will cost ins companies billions of dollars in claims. I feel pretty good about my company having enough money to pay any claim I should make. P.S., they don't care if you shop around.

State Farm is a preferred carrier and if you "qualify" into their preferred risk then yes. Now, your son is 21 and unless it is cost effective for him to be under your policy it would be best for him to get his own policy elsewhere until he is 25 and above with a clean record. They are a reputable carrier because they keep low risk. For a 21 year old i would suggest: Drive Insurance (by Progressive), Western United (by AAA), Mercury. There will be some other carriers with better rates but will lack in response, service, and quality. Then again I am here in CA. Most carriers do not use credit here.

If they don't want to you to shop around I would say they have something to hide. Try calling Progresssive, I have been with them since I was 16, now 37. Never had a problem, and they recommened shopping around. Seems pretty honest to me.

I don't know about State Farm but Nationwide is pretty good.

No they cant, by federal law, no business is allowed to check your credit unless you give them permission and they must have your social security number in order to get the results back for the right person. I am with State Farm also. I have been with them for almost 14 years, they have always given me great service and has always came through when I needed them. now for your high premium, your son's age has alot to do with your high premium. he is considered a "inexperienced driver" and if your Jeep is fairly new, and you have another vehicle on the policy as well..........the newest vehicle is where the premium increase for his age usually hits your wallet. Now you say that you have your house and another truck with them?
State Farm usually gives a multi car discount for for autos, and if your house is with them as well, they usually give another discount. I would inquire with your agent.
Now u say you have been shopping around for insurance. My advice?, stay with who you are if you can afford the premiums, because if you move to another company, your premiums are likely to be higher. If you do decide to move to another insurance company, I recommend that you stay with "one company " insurance agencies, i dont recommend going to independant insurance agents, they are usually lacking in service when you need it most. Now for ladyluck saying where State Farm dropped her friends claim, there is more to that story than what she is telling, I have never known State Farm to back down when another person was at fault. They actually have people that will fight for you when and if you need it. For them to actually drop the claim, there had to be something wrong.

I have had State Farm Insurance before and they seem to keep increasing their rates. I decided to shop around and have changed to Progressive and have enjoyed them a lot better than State Farm.

Good luck!

They are a really good company but as soon as u get a ticket or an accident they will get rid of you. Even if you were with them for 20 yrs. (Personal experience)

I used to have State Farm until I got my new car. I shopped around and went with Progressive. They were by far the best price and coverage, and I save $300 a year compared to State Farm.

As for State Farm knowing that you are shopping around, they won't know that unless you tell them. The insurance companies you are shopping around with cannot give out information due to confidentiality, and those kind of things do not show up on your credit report.

State Farm also failed to represent my friend after her accident.
They were all set to go to court THREE TIMES, and after the third time State Farm informed her that they were dropping the claim. The accident was CLEARLY not her fault (the other car ran a red light and hit her front passanger side door. There were 5 witnesses that were ready to testify on my friend's behalf.)

I would go to www.progressive.com and check their prices. A plus of doing this is that they also give you rate quotes of other companies. It helps you save some foot work.

Good luck.

Just me
I've been with State Farm for over 20 years - and I can't find any better insurance. Sure, there are cheaper companies, but none that I feel will be there for me when I need them! Do you have multi-line discounts? When I asked them to add renter's insurance to our two cars (I have a 21-year old daughter), my car insurance actually went DOWN, because of the discounts! I get my renter's coverage for free!

I've had to make claims to State Farm (unfortunately), but they've always come through quickly and easily for me. Stay with them....

I'm primarily going to repeat what other posters have said, but I work for State Farm.

If you have two vehicles and a Home with State Farm you should be getting both the Multi-Car and Multi-Line Discounts. Also, depending on how long you've been with State Farm, you might be getting a Loyalty Discount for having been with them 3, 6, or 9 years.
Yes, your son will cost you an arm and a leg (I'm a 24 yr old male myself). This will be true for almost any Insurance company.
Depending on who your Agent is they might be able to swap it out so that your son in on the cheapest vehicle to insure. This might save you a lot of money, but it couple be worth a few dollars.
No, we cannot tell when you are shopping around.
How many miles do you drive annually? You might be able, depending again on the state, to get a lower premium based on your annual mileage.
