I am an EMT. To drive an ambulance you need to take a drving course but requires no special license. Depending on where you go you do need to be either licensed in CPR, MRT or EMT. Good luck...it's a great job! |

If you live in California, you can go to the DMV and buy a "Ambulance Driver's Training Manual" for $5.
After you study that you need:
1) A DMV green card from your doctor saying that you are cleared to drive.
2) A set of "Live Scan" finger prints (They cost about $60-80 depending on where you get your hands scanned at)
3) and you need to be a EMT registered in a county |

My buddy was an EMT, and he drove the ambulance. He didn't need any special licenses other than his EMT training. You could probably drive an ambulance without your EMT certification, but I doubt if you could get hired just to drive the ambulance. That would be a waste of money for the employer. |

it depends on what state you live in... for example, in wv, you only have to have a cpr card, and a valid drivers licenses, in the state of ky though, you have to have minimum training of a first responder, but you cant treat the pt in any state unless you have your emt licenses. |

This varies from state to state and even from country to country. In some states the only requirement for driving an ambulance is to be the age of 21, a good driving record, and a 16 - 24 hour course in Emergency Vehicle Operations. This is usually referred to as EVOC or CEVO (Coached Emergency Vehicle Operations).
Some states may require what is known as a for hire license, the same that Taxi drivers have to have. But mainly it depends on the organization and their Insurance providers.
Now to work on an ambulance is a different story, the minimum level of training needed in the U.S. is Emergency Medical Technician Basic, but some companies do hire just CEVO's but usually require them to obtain certification as an EMT within a certain amount of time.
Hope this helps and let me know if there is anything else that I can assist you with. |

I hope you can tell from the number of inconsistent answers that your location is critical for an accurate answer. There are NO driving laws that apply nationwide in the US. ALL such laws are state or local laws. |

In Ohio, only a chauffer's license is required to drive. But you can't treat patients without emt training |

No you don't but you have to take the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator's test. It involves you driving the ambulance backwards 400 feet. Parking, reversing, turning. If you apply to a private ambulance then have to certify you. But otherwise you use your regular Driver's license for driving cars. |

Yes : according to the Department of Motor Vehicles they
Require Emergency Medical Tec 1 A Driver's License plus
must pass a C.P.R Test given by the American Red Cross or
have state Transport Registration with ( E) license plate symbol only |

In Missouri, you don't have to have a chauffer's license to drive an ambulance, but many employers do require it. You also have to have a minimum of EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician-Basic) in order to do this. This is usually a college semester class, but additional testing.
BTW, paramedics and EMT-Bs often taken offense at being labeled "ambulance driver". |

The state of Georgia requires that you first must pass National Registry and and then you must have a valid drivers license |

If I am correct you need a CDL license to drive a rescue vehicle because that is a civil service job and a county vehicle that you are referring to not unless you are talking about a private ambulance service and even them I think you need a CDL license because you are transporting people to a public facility check out the requirements in your county and state to be sure. |

To drive an ambulance you DO NOT need to be an emt if your working for a volunteer fire and rescue
some full time ems departments do hire just full time drivers without being an emt but not usually
yes you need a special license you have to go thru EVOC (emergency vehicle operator course) and at the end of the course and all of your hours you will receive the license/certificate..
if you google evoc and your state youll come up with someone offering the course (usually held at a fire department) |

yes you have to, you need to go through training to be an EMT worker, which includes driving an ambulance because you too have to take care of the patient on the spot and take care of them all through the trip to the ER. Its not just driving. |

I'm not positive but I think you have to go through EMT training and get the road course training for driving too.
Just a guess. |

yes, and they aren't called ambulance drivers; they are called (EMT) emergency medical technicians and they go to school for that. Their job is to give emergency help to people in need. It's not just a job, but its a vocation. |

In South Dakota you need to be an EMT (any flavor) or a First Responder. All are encouraged to take EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Course) which might be required for First Responders.
EVOC was part of my EMT training. |

No, but there is specialist training required. Ask at your local ambulance head quarters or the job centre. You must have a clean licence. |
