You normally have to be 21 to rent a car, but if you don't have insurance, then they make you buy theirs for an extra charge.

At most companies any additional drivers must meet the same requirement as the renter and the minimum age is 21. If this is the case you can't legally drive the car. There are exceptions. You need to check with the company you will be renting from. Here are the Alamo rules.

# Montgomery, AL: Does not permit renters under age 25.
# Michigan: The minimum age for MI is 18 years of age. A $45.00 per day fee applies to 18-20 under age renters or $25.00 for renters 21-24.

It depends, some insurance companies will extend your current policy to the one vehicle you are going to rent. Often this only covers the physical damage component. No, liability follows the vehicle. If you are involved in an at fault accident, you will be responsible for any damages which exceed the rental company's liability coverage. Rental companies usually carry only the minimal coverage. In MA, it is 20,000/40,000/5,000.
