Do you think bicycle riders and skateboarders should have to be licenced and insured?

Since both of these modes of transportation can be used on the roads shouldn't the rider bee required to take a road test, carry liability insurance as well as wear the required safety equipment.I don't think skateboards were intended for road travel but for recreation, in skatebord parks not on busy highways in the city.I think too many people are not aware of the rules of the road and that includes all forms of transportation. I'm sure most users on this site have had near misses and a few collisions with wreckless or inexperienced riders. Should peole who use the highway be required to carry liability insurance?

I think the young people who want to skateboard should hsve a safe place to do it.I don't think that a helmet affords the rider mmuch protection on city highways.A car cannot stop fast enough to avoid a skateboarder whizzing in and out of traffic.

That's a hot topic where I live. Our city council approved a bunch of roadwork. Way too many of those "share the road signs" went up at a major thoroughfare (speed of 65mph). The road was repaved, widened and painted with bicycle lanes. I've had cyclists perform some dangerous maneuvers to beat cars to a favored spot. Scares me half to death in my mini van. I'm where I'm supposed to be but they think they own the road and that there are no rules. I really don't want one of those poor slobs cutting in front of me and getting hit. The cyclist should be held accountable for their fair share of things, that includes insurance. Just as motorized bikes have to be registered, so should nonmotorized bikes. Anyone operating a street legal transportation device should have to prove their knowledge and understanding of the rules/ laws pertaining to their chosen transportation device. As far as skateboarders go, they should be treated as pedestrians. They should however, be required to wear helmets and receive tickets if the law is not followed. My dss was ticketed for this at age 16. The judge did not give him any type of punishment so he is still boarding around w/o a helmet nearly 2 years later. If he were my own kid, I'd make sure to push this, but his parents don't do a dang thing to make him follow the law. I'm sure this is a life lesson that is being overlooked and will resurface later as a disregard for the law in other areas. The parents and law inforcement need to be more diligent to make it work.

In some ways I do. If they are using the public roads, then yes, there should be some sort of license. You could use that money to pay for bike lanes on roads, paths, and trails.

I do,Gussie - and they should be better policed too.
On the other hand there should be more cycle tracks and skateboard parks to keep them off of the pavements!

How are you going to licence and insure a 7 year old kid who rides his bike to school? Sorry, back to the drawing board for you.

Well if we force e1 that rides a bike or a skateboard to get insurance and licensed, well then we also must force Amish ppl to get license and insurance for horse and buggies. Don't you think we are forced to do enough now that we don't want to do. Seat belts, no smoking bans, i just cant think of any others there are so many.
People that drive cars need to slow down some and keep alert for kids riding bikes and state boards.
oh whats the next thing to put insurance and license on roller skates?

MR. THINKER!
WOW! that's a great question. . . . I'll get back to you on that one. . . . .

I definitely think they should!
