Does a car not in use need insurance?

Just wondering what the laws were in Canada if I need insurance on my car that is unplated and probably going to the junk yard in the next 2 weeks (have to scavenge some parts before I let it go)

Calling my insurance company tomorrow to add on the new car but wondering if I should take the old car off altogether?

If the car is going to the junk yard, and you aren't driving it there, and it is parked on your private property, it doesn't need insurance. Don't add the new one and delete the old one, just do a transfer, it is normally cheaper than a cancellation (unless you are near the expiry of your policy.)
Verify with your broker, the information I give you is guaranteed correct where I live (Manitoba), but there may be a variation on policies depending on what province you live in.

well if your not using the car do you think you should be paying for it to be protected? i dont think so, its just a waste of money

Assuming Canuck insurance is similar to Yank insurance (I'm an Yank), you would need "comprehensive" coverage only. Comprehensive coverage provides you with protection for things such as theft, glass breakage, etc...(tree falls on car),,,,things like that....
