Does an accident I was not involved in affect my claims history?

I have car insurance in my name with my partner as a second named driver. Last year my partner had an accident and went into the back of someone. I was elsewhere at the time. Of course the third parties claimed on our insurance. What surprises me is that it seems that we now have to each individually declare the accident on our claims history. I realise and accept that I have lost my no claims bonus, but to have to declare the accident on my history in exactly the same way as my partner seems wrong. I have never had a car accident. Does anyone know if this is right?

yes if she is on your policy, thats why it's cheaper that way.

When you're asked by a future insurer whether you've had to make a claim, you tell them you've had to make a claim. They're not interested in who had what "accident" - they're only interested in the claims that have been made on a policy that was in your name.

Anyhow, they ask this stuff but all the info is available to them on the MIB system anyhow.

Yes I am a named driver on my husbands insurance and I had an accident last year, and it affected his insurance.

Yes it is correct. You are the first named driver and she is the second named driver, she is driving on your policy. If she has an accident it will be declared on both of you as if you was there even though you was not.

i havent crashed, but im pretty sure that on all the insurance forms ive ever filled out (alot searching for the best deal) it asks what accidents YOU were involved in, and does this for each named driver, so i would only declare it under your partners section. they also usually ask for your NCB, which would be none, or whatever (you usually just go back a stage, depends on the company)

Its your policy, and the claim was made on that!

You have to declare any claims made on your policy within the specified time frame, usually 5 years

You should review your MVR (Motor Vehicle Report) of moving violations and accidents. MVR's available at DMV offices. Accidents stay on your record for 37 mos. Tickets should be dealt with individually - ie: traffic violator school or appear in court to plead.)
I would check with your insurance agent as to how long to declare the claim on a history report - if it's not on your MVR, it may not have been reported to the DMV.
