the theory test is the law in the uk so you must take it. you cant go for your practical test without your theory certificate so dont think you can get away with it. if you have been driving for a year then you should know all the answers for the theory test and if you dont know then you shouldnt be driving |

You have to take the Theory AND the Practical tests. The theory test is really easy. I studied for about 2 months before taking it with a guide to road signs and the theory test/answer book. I checked both out from the local library here. It is really easy, and the test questions are identical to those in the books.
I do suggest buying a Hazard Perception practice dvd. It simulates the H.P. test and really gets you ready for it (i.e. knowing exactly when to click the mouse).
I was absolutely frightened I would fail, even though I had been driving for 12 years in the U.S., but I passed! I do suggest you take some driving lessons--I didn't think I would need them, but I did. There are silly rules here like looking in all three mirrors before manuevering, checking the mirror every time before you break and/or shift gears, applying the handbrake EVERY time the car stops, and not pushing the clutch in until the car is literally about to stall. I had about 3 lessons in total, but it made me a lot more confident.
Good luck! |

What is there to worry about theory tests are focused on safety and common sense answers |

YES....you will have to pass the Theory Test BEFORE you can apply for a UK Driving Test. I would advise take both tests before your International Licence (allowing you to drive for 12 months) expires, OR you will not be able to drive without L-plates and a qualified driver (over 21 and has had a full licence for 3 years). Hope this information helps. |

Yes you do.
Anyone applying for a UK drivers license has to sit it both theory and practible, it is a two part test and cannot be split.
Its not just just for your benefit but for others drivers and pedestrians too. Also the theory test is quite simple, and based a lot on commo sense and road awareness.
It is very important that you know the rules of the road in this country - you only have to look at the idiots at roundabouts all looking blanky at eachother to realise that many people clearly don't! |

Yes, I believe the same rules apply as to UK citizens. Theory test (which you have to pass first) then practical. |

The UK driving test has two parts - one theory and one practical, so I guess you have to take both. After all, you need to know all our road signs - we've got enough idiots on the road - so prove you're worthy of a driving licence 100%. The rest of us have had to. |
