Does having a pass plus certificate actually make a difference on the insurance?

Does having a pass plus certificate actually make a difference on the insurance?

I passed my test last week - im 27.

My insurance for fully comp is being quoted at a 1000, 213 pounds deposit and 94 pounds a month.

that's for fully comp. My driving instructor gave me a pass plus certificate for 40 quid but its not making a difference to the insurance premium, is this right?

cheapest insurance is with direct line so far. those price comparison sites dont seem too good.

Thanks

Shop around. My son passed his test and pass plus when he was 17.
He saved more than enough to pay for the pass plus on the first premium.

Passing your test 10 years ago would have made a HUGE difference. You are a new driver and will be treated as such by the evil insurance companies for many years to come. Your best bet is calling them, Tesco's are good for this, tell them that Privilege insurance have quoted you half as much, 'they usually match it'. Good luck, and drive safe.

With Directline it won't make a difference.
In fact, most insurer's think it's a waste of money- it rarely reduces your premium. You're better off testing whether or not it will make any difference to you before you do it by getting quotes in most cases.

As you already have yours I'm afraid that you can't get that £40 back so you'll just have to wait until you have some no claims bonus or just more experience as a driver because that's really the only times your premium will reduce without you actively searching for cheaper options- oh and as you're older- over 25's get better deals even if you're a new driver!

In some cases it actually makes it cheaper to have another driver on the insurance if their a long time good driver- ie. mum, or older sister or something. Make sure the person actually drives the car as well though- you don't want to be done for insurance fraud. If they are the main driver you could add yourself as a named driver and it may work out cheaper. You'd have to cancel your current policy and get a new one in their name though. Alternatively, you can add someone else to your existing policy whenever you like during the year.

Best way to get cheap car insurance next year- don't claim!

Don't know what your excess is but increasing it to the maximum the company will allow for someone of your age is also a good option as it lowers your overall premium and you only pay it if you claim.

Also, don't know how much your car is worth but it's usually a better option to just go with third party rather than fully comp, but not all insurance companies allow this, so, alternatively, go with third party & fire/ third party & theft/ third party, fire & theft. Some insurance companies don't advertise all these options but they are often available if you ask- and can work out a lot cheaper than fully comp (though in some RARE cases it's actually the same price to go with fully comp so check all your options).

Also- just to add an obvious one- the area your car is kept in (no. of car thefts, accidents etc) can affect your premuim, as can the car itself (tinted windows, alloys, roof rack, big engine, car with high accident stats etc).

So get a cheap small safe car, live in a low theft/accident postcode, don't make any claims, have a high excess and go for third party only cover.

Oh and with fully comp insurance at DL (and loads of others) if you get a chip in your windscreen then get it sorted by Autoglass asap because with fully comp it's free and you don't have to pay your excess. If you leave it and it becomes a crack you get charged your glass excess and it counts as a proper claim on your insurance.

Hope I've helped!

Doubt it not at your age, you'll not be as risky as a 17 year old anyway. Have you tried Tesco insurance.

Only certain insurance companies recognise pass plus thats the problem.

You can get better quotes by shopping around than you will get from the companies who offer discounts!

Sad state of affairs since you dont fall into the "at risk" category!

Good luck, hope you find a cheap quote.

it should make a difference but it might be because of your age. 27 year olds may be seen as a mature group and not likely to crash . i think the pass plus is more for teenagers and early 20s. when i did mine it only took £100 off and i was 17.

if you are not sure , ring up the insurance company and ask about it. some online quotes can be annoyingly inaccurate and you are much more likely to get a better deal over the phone as you can sometimes nagotiate the price down a bit.

Try getting an online insurance quote It's free and generally hassle free. http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Auto-Insurance.html

pass plus can make a difference but it depends on insurance comp. for a cheaper quote try lowering original quote to a better 1, say 857 then phone swinton insurance who will shop around and try to beat it this could be repeated with others, always knock off money from quote when phoning next company,

i got fully comp and business insurance on a 1.6, for first yr insurance for 837, with pass plus n i'm 24, this yr i got it for 457, using same method

The Pass Plus course is a voluntary one and is already available to anyone who has passed their driving test in the last 12 months. It provides training in areas including driving at night, motorway driving and all-weather driving. It also offers the chance to cut insurance premiums, which are often sky-high for young drivers. Pass Plus graduates discounts, some of up to 40%. †
