Does insurance have to be under my name?

the moment your dad switched ownership to you, he lost insurable interest. if you have an accident with the car and the insurance company finds out your dad was not the legal owner of the car, they don't have to pay a dime. get the title, registration and insurance in your name to prevent an uncovered claim.

I don't think your dad can insure a car that he doesn't own.

However, an insurance company may issue a liability policy to an employee of a company who does not own a car, but drives a company car (to cover the employee in case of negligence on their part).

The best bet is to check with your insurance carrier in the state of your residence.

But can't you go on YOUR fathers vehicle insurance if he has another vehicle? He has the option to include or exclude you. You and your father may have to go to the insurance company and have another policy drawn, (or changed) and it would be cheaper for you. But only if your father agrees with it. 1 wreck and your fathers insurance goes up.

It all depends on your age too...Plus ..if you pay for your own car insurance, make sure you get a great deal cause its not cheap. To hold down insurance cost also you might want to consider just insuring the car with liability insurance. Again, this is based on how old the car is and your age, driving experience...blah blah blah.

This may vary by state, but here in CA, if your father has no ownership interest in the vehicle (which he doesn't if his name is not on title) then he has no insurable interest in the vehicle and the insurance can not be in his name. If he adds you to his policy as a NAMED INSURED (not just a driver) then you can add the vehicle to his policy which might save you money.
Otherwise, you have to get your own policy. If you leave the vehicle on his policy with the reg in your name and there is a claim, the carrier has grounds to deny the claim. I would not chance it. Shop around and find some affordable insurance in your name.

the insurance can be under anyone's name as long as it is the amount of coverage required by your state to be legal to drive. It would be best to leave it under your fathers name because it will be cheaper that way.

Yes, the owner of the car must have insurance to cover the car. If the car is no longer in his name, he would not be able to obtain the auto insurance for the vehicle.
