Does it really matter if you get the insurance coverage that car rental companies try to sell you?

Check with your own insurance company and see if your policy covers a rental car. If it does, you may not want to pay for the insurance from the rental company.

Most of the time it is a total ripoff-talk to your insurance dude-unless you don't have one-then it MIGHT be a good idea.

Not if you have full coverage insurance, you are good to go.. If you have basic liability insurance, then you will need to pick up thier insurance for the rental.

Check with your credit card company also, some credit cards will automatically give you insurance on rental cars as a perk for using their card.

Most Insurance companies cover the insurance on the rental car, if you have full coverage. Some companies only cover damage to a vehicle similar to the one insured. State Farm covers damage to ANY vehicle that you rent, even a U-Haul or high-end car. Some states (not California) can charge if you have a loss with a rental car for down time. Check the rental company, every state is different.

Sometimes your credit card company will pick up the waiver of deductible, even if your car insurance doesn't carry over.

However, one thing that the rental car company will ALSO slam you with, that ISN'T covered by either your insurance, or the credit card waiver, is LOSS OF RENTAL INCOME - ie, when the rental car is in the shop for repairs due to your incident, they can charge you (and WILL charge you!) for what they would have made by renting the car out, if they could have.

What I tell my clients is, don't depend on the credit card coverage. I've seen too many times where it's just a major hassle to get that invoked. If your policy will carry over to a rental car, AND you're renting in the US, then don't buy the waiver.

But if you're renting outside of the US, BUY THE WAIVER, as you can easily rack up $1,000 in long distance telephone bills trying to get everything straightened out. And it isn't the waiver that they are really buying, it's the elimination of the hassle factor.

I read somewhere that the waiver that they sell is more profitable than the actual rental of the car. If you calculate it out, $15 a day times 365 is $5400 a year, for COLLISION & COMP, with a $1,000 limit. WOW. I'm in the wrong business!!
