Does my insurance cover my boyfriend driving my car?

I was out of town with my boyfriend and I was tired of driving so he drove and got pulled over (we were both in the car). I have insurance on my car which is a Ford Explorer however we were driving a Ranger that weekend. My dad pays my insurance and he said I am insured to drive any car so the fact that my insurance slip said Ford Explorer shouldn't matter. When we got pulled over the cop wrote a ticket for driving uninsured because the slip didn't say Ford Ranger on it and I need to have proof of that. Shouldn't I be covered no matter what car the slip has on it? Also, if my boyfriend takes a copy of the insurance slip to court will they drop the ticket or does that not cover him even if I was in the car? I live in Oregon and we got pulled over in Washington if that helps.

cars are insured, not people. The policy is written on a specific vehicle, which is why your VIN is on the policy.

The ranger needs its own policy. Think about what happens if your car is stolen and the thief crashes it. Your insurance pays for the damage, and then goes after the thief to pay THEM back.

it doesn't matter whether or not the thief is insured.

From previous answers it looks like you get a better deal in the States than you do in Europe as You say the car is insured and not the driver.

In Europe the driver has to be named to drive a specific car, or can be able to drive any other car with noted details on the policy, i.e not belonging to you.

In your case I think you are ok as you are insured for any car, but your boyfriend is not a named driver on your policy and is therefore not covered.

Sorry, dad is wrong in this case. Insurance goes with cars, not with drivers. So if the Ranger was insured and you had the owners permission to drive it, you were covered. Just get the Ranger insurance card and show it to the judge. If the Ranger is not insured and you were counting on your Explorer insurance to cover it, you're out of luck.
