Does my mate need insurance to sit at the side of me while I'm driving?
Find answers to your legal question.

Does my mate need insurance to sit at the side of me while I'm driving?

I've been learning to drive for the past 12 months, and just bought a car of my own. If I'm insured to drive it on a provisional license and have a mate (or my dad) who is over 21 and had a license for 8 years, does he need to insured also, or does my insurance cover it?
Additional Details
I'm asking if he needs insurance because I've not got a full license, and he will be responsible for me while he's sat at the side of me while I'm driving.

No he does not need insurance - only the driver of the vehicle does. Incidentally, he is NOT responsible for you! The idea is that whilst you are still a Learner you always have an experienced driver beside you to point out things like it is a good idea to stop at junctions, go round roundabout the right way etc etc He has no legal responsibility for you.

COLIN T is right. You are responsible while you're driving, your "supervisor" is only there to give you the benefit of his experience. Only you need to be insured (unless he needs to drive too).

The supervising driver must be 21 and have held a U.K. license for 3 or more years, but as noted already, does NOT need to be covered by insurance -- Unless, of course, you think that at some point you might need him to take over in the driver's seat.

Some specific laws do apply to the supervising driver as well as the learner, however, e.g. not allowed to use a handheld mobile phone, must not be legally intoxicated, etc.

AFAIK that will be OK.

If you are driving the current vehicle, then you will need to be insured, the best way is obviously to be a named driver on the vehicle's own insurance policy.

I don't think the accomplained passenger needs to be insured unless he decides to drive at some point, which is more than likely. However, you are probably already aware that they will still need to meet the age and licence requirements.

I am not too sure, but I doubt it.

Your insurance will cover you and any passengers in your vehicle.

You may want to contact your insurance company to just review the limits on some of the coverages. There are some coverages on your policy that will take care of bodily injuries... but only up to a certain amount.
