Yeah especially if it's not working and not registered they will tow the heck out of you.

Sorry about the bad luck.

Katie
yeah, because first of all you should have reported it as "out of order"...

I would also expect a fine from the state for failure to register. You'll likely also have to provide proof of ownership when you pick it up at the impound.

Fordman
Yes maam they do. If the car was unlicensed, then it shouldn't be on the road.

Sorry for your sister's luck, but the law is the law. Good luck to her.

The Chesire Cat
Yes..
they have every right to tow an unregistered, inoperable car that is parked on a public city street..

Its considered an abandoned vehicle...

it will go to impound then public auction if she does not pay all fines, get it registered and pay for the impound fees..

if it is inoperable, sounds like it is not worth the cost and trouble of getting it back..

tdjnonstop
yes they can do that anywere ...if it doesnt belong

In my city, unregistered vehicles, parked on a city street will be towed at owners expense.
We are allowed however to park our vehicles that are not registered within the limits of our yard or drive-way, without recourse. Provided that the neighbors do not complain that your yard is looking somewhat like a junkyard/salvage yard......

BOYD H
Yes if they have a city ordnance stating such. Most cities can and do enforce these.

Reina de Trebol
yes they do

king_tots
yup, especially if it parked on the street not working and unregistered. cars like that are supposed to be kept in the garage.

lifetime rocker
she should move it into a garage or something if she can cause they will definately tow it off.

Yes they can. They'll use the VIN to find the owner. The public streets are not vehicle dumps.

It is illegal to park an unregistered vehicle on a city street. Yes, they have the right to tow it away. They usually leave a notice a few days before.

No registration, and on public property? You bet they do. Your sister will also get a bill for towing and storage.

Special K
That depends on where you live really, You could go to the court house or look online and find out about the laws in your area. Some places have what I think is called a junk vehicle ordinance, we have one. Even if its in your back yard, they can come and take it. Doesnt matter if its registered, payed for, not payed for, if it doesnt run or isnt being used, it can be taken. I recommend you going to the court house and finding out wh they took it, and if its a law, if not... Then you should be able to get your car back. Good luck with it all.

flea
Yes ..most cities can and will as they consider it abandoned because it's not licensed. Most are required to post a notice on the auto giving the owner 24 hours to move the auto before its taken..

Dixie Darlin'
Yes, it depends on your local government but most places have ordinances set where you can not have an uninsured broke down vehicle in your yard or on the street for more than 90 days. All the laws vary for each area but that ordinance is pretty standard.

?
The city of Burbank California has a list of municipal codes dedicated to defining abandoned vehicles. The page shown in the source below is extensive but easy to locate specific areas of interest. First section of the code is primarily a list, and the actual definitions of specific codes are found lower in the document.
