Does the color of your vehicle affect the price of your car insurance?

Ignore most of the answers you have already received, it's people repeating what they have heard and has no basis in fact. The color of your car makes absolutely no difference, and the insurance company doesn't even ask the color. You will also hear that cops write more tickets to red cars. That isn't true either, it doesn't matter what color it is when you take the corner on 2 wheels and go over the speed limit on the straightaway and play your music to be heard 6 blocks away, you get the ticket. Red, black, green, blue, silver, doesn't matter.

We called State Farm Insurance Co.. headquarters in Bloomington, Il, to find an answer. A member of State Farm's Underwriting Department told one of our research group that the color of your car does not affect car insurance rates. He also said that there is nothing in any of the insurance company’s data—including the VINs—to remotely determine the color of a vehicle. Hope this helps. My insurance agent has never seen my car nor has she asked what color it is. Not sure it matters.

This is a urban legend. Color has nothing to do with how your insurance rates are calculated. Rates are based on driving record, type of car, among other factors. When getting quotes, the color of your vehicle is never asked. When setting up an insurance policy color is asked as a reference to what your vehicle looks like, and does not in any way affect your rate

Not directly....they insure by the vehicle make and model, BUT

if you have a specialty car or a collectors car..and the paint job is unique and costs more then the annual income of a small country, then you are supposed to disclose this and your insurance premium will be adjusted accordingly.

Well, if you have a red Corvette your insurance would be more than a black Chevette!!
I am a licenced insurance broker and registrations agent. I don't care what colour your car is, it isn't part of the rate grouping. I need the colour to register and plate your vehicle, not to tell you how much the insurance is. "I heard" and " I know a guy" are the least reliable source of information on the planet.

They go with the VIN. The color isn't in the VIN number. I'm sure they have stats on everything they can and they know what colors have more wrecks and problems. They deal with so many, it kind of balances out.

Yes , I believe it does. But they don't just take the color of your vehicle as the sole basis of your car insurance rate.
They take into account your age and gender because it is a premise that the younger the person is, the less experience and reckless one usually is.

This is not being discriminatory but they have statistics to prove it.

Also the color of you car , somewhat reflect ones personality. Bright colored ones tend to like to attract attention and that includes speeding and reckless driving.
Again I believe that they have statistics to support it.

Taking this into account, one could counter this by applying for multiple car discounts or if you belong to a certain profession like doctors, lawyers , etc , one could get discount for those.

So anyway good luck in your car insurance shopping and also bear in mind that different insurance companies have different criteria or put different weight on their so called criteria.

HAPPY HUNTING

Hi, it does. If you have a red car then they can assume its a racing color and your rates go up.
