I live in Texas and I'm going to purchase a 1989 pontiac firebird. The registration is exprired, so does the present owner need to renew the registration before signing the title over, or can he go ahead and sign it over to me and I take care of it?

I live in Texas too, when you change the title the registration will be put into your name as will the title. They will ask you if it has been use, and if it has they will charge you for the time it has been use. If you think it has been setting for awhile, just tell the clerk that. But like one of the others said make sure you have a good title, with the car sitting for awhile there could be something wrong. |

No. Hand the plates in, and so long as you can provide proof that you own it (receipt from previous owner), re-register it in your own name. Make 100% sure that he/she was the legal owner, and that the vehicle is unencumbered though. |

he can just go ahead and sign it over to you ,,the registration only matters if he wants to renew it and drive it,,the title is the main concern,,as long as it is clear ,,and free of any liens,,its OK to sign it over to you,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s. |

Nope. If he's not driving it, he doesn't need to - you've got to register it in your name anyway within ?? days or before you can drive it, so why should he? |

You have to register the car in your name before you can legally drive it. |

I would suggest that before you purchase your Firebird you call your local Motor Vehicle Department and ask: " If I purchase a vehicle with expired registration, would I be responsible to pay all the past due fees in order to register my car". I don't know about Texas law but in my state you would owe those fees. |
