In front of you is a slow-moving truck that you want to pass. You see no vehicles coming from the other direction. What four things should you consider as you decide whether or not to pass?

See if the line is one solid to your left and one line of DASHED yellow lines to the right of the yellow line.
Scan about 300 feet in front of you.
Look for curves.
Make sure you'll pass before the line becomes two solid yellow lines again.

1. is it a legal "passing zone" to start with?
2. any traffic coming from your rear?
3. you can only see a certain distance ahead of you. is that enough distance to pass safely without unreasonable speed?
4.is the overall area of road, and the lay of the land, a safe area to be passing in the first place? ie: hills and valleys that hide cars coming at you, unseen side roads, condition of road surface (chug holes, ice, water,etc), weather?
5. i add a fifth item. do you know the immediate intentions of the truck driver(turning, stopping, does the truck know u are behind him?) |

You should look at the road signs and pavement markings so that you can determine if passing is legal. You also need to look at the weather conditions because passing can be very difficult in bad weather. You need to check your speed and the speed of the other vehicles around you. |
