In the state of California, what is the law pertaining to driving without a license (but WITH a permit, without parents)? I know it's probably illegal, but how illegal is it and what's the typical punishment? Help much appreciated!! Thanks~!!

Driving on a permit without a qualified licensed driver with you is a misdemeanor & will get you a $300 fine (unless it has changed), possible impound of the vehicle (costing your parents more money to get the car out of impound), 1 point on your permit it looks like & you will not be eligible to apply for your license until you are 18- meaning that you will have to drive that much longer with a qualified licensed driver with you at all times.
Also, being a minor under 18, if you accrue 2 points on your permit/license in 12 months, you can have a 30 day restriction placed on your permit/license. If you accrue 3 points in 12 months- you will face a suspension.
Remember, you do not have any right to drive. A driver's license is a privilege offered to you by your state, and only a privilege. It can be taken away for any reason, at any time. And these suspensions/revocations do follow you to other states, so you can't get away from losing your license in CA by moving to another state & apply for one there. |

If your real question is "What if I drive alone with only a permit" which I suspect it is, you get a ticket for driving without a license, it's possible your car gets impounded, and the court can take your permit and not allow you to get a license until you are 18.
Note it doesn't have to be your parents in the front seat with you, it can be any licensed driver over 25 years old.
To quote the web page: A parent, guardian, spouse or adult 25 years of age or older, who has a valid California driver license, must be with you when you drive. He or she must sit in a position close enough to take control of the vehicle, if necessary. It is illegal for you to drive alone at any time. |

What a question--"how illegal is it?" Illegal is illegal; there are no shades or modifiers to it. Punishment could be a stiff fine and/or license suspension, or a long delay in getting your license/permit eventually. |
