Driving lessons for test?

how many driving lessons do you have to take to sit the test

<----->
As many or as little as you want. There is no set number. You can take your test whenever you feel ready. If you wanted you could take your test without having any lessons, but that's not really a good idea.

@ the previous cynical contributor - it is the job of all professional driving instructors to teach people to drive safely, not just to pass a test and that's precisely what most of us in the UK driver training industry do...no good instructor "strings out" lessons to get more money as people tend to vote with their feet with those instructors who might be less ethical than they should be. To say "don't ask a driving instructor" is really, really STUPID - they are exactly who you SHOULD ask as they know far better than your parents/friends etc exactly what is required in the practical driving test and how to teach you to not only the standard required for your test but to equip you with the right skills to handle any situation on the road and to be a safe and responsible driver...

To answer the original question, you may as well ask how long is a piece of string :)

There is no "set number" of lessons you HAVE to take and as others have said, there is no legal requirement to have any professional training at all - however, in reality many, many people have found out (literally) to their cost that trying to cut corners doesn't work when they waste their money and time attempting driving tests which they don't have a hope of passing due to inadequate and/or incorrect preparation.

Everyone is different and everyone learns how to drive at their own pace and in their own way.

There's no point comparing yourself with anyone else either - Mum and Dad may have passed their test in 10 lessons 20 years ago, but the road conditions are hugely different now, there's several million more cars on the roads of the UK for starters and the driving test is much, MUCH harder than it was years ago.

The Driving Standards Agency (the government dept responsible for setting the driving test, employing all the driving examiners and regulating the driver training industry) issue guidelines as to how many hours of training the "average person" should expect to take;
"Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test." (source http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/PracticalTest/DG_4022483)

But like most guidelines, some people will need more than 45 hours and some will need less...as I said before, everyone is different :)

Taking a test before you are properly ready is likely to result in disappointment and even more expense...

There is no set number. You could take it without any lessons if you really wanted. Best thing to do is talk to your instructor and ask if they think you are ready or if you think you are good enough then go for it. You can always take it again if you need

It or-depends on you really. How well you take to driving your instructor will no when you are ready :)

im on my 15th lesson and im ready for my test but im having a couple more thru personal choice just for confidence purposes. it also depends which driving school you choose because some make you have a set amount before you can put in for your test. AA dropped my friend when she failed 4 times. she passed now but that really knocked her confidence as you can imagine. you will know yourself when u are ready and it wont depend on how many lessons you have it depends on how u get taught, if you pick it up fast and if you gel with your instructor.

It depends on you, there is no limit.

As many as necessary to get your confidence and competence level to the point you can pass the driving test.

As someone has said, there is no legal requirement in the UK to have any lessons with an instructor.
You should be able to recognise when you are competent in all the set elements of the test, as well as general driving ability.
I wouldn't ask an instructor, they obviously have a vested financial interest in stringing out your driving education!
The best thing to do, and I see a great lack of it on YA!, is to practice between lessons - If you're relying on paying £20 or so for every hour you're behind the wheel, it's a bloody expensive game. Most drivers who practice are perfectly capable of passing a practical test following eight to ten hours of instruction.

it depends on how good u are

It depends on your state. In California, you don't have to take any driv ing lessons to in order to take the driving test.
