Driving without car insurance?

So, Im broke and I know its a really awful idea to drive without car insurance, but Im a little unclear about what the rules actually are. I know it is illegal to drive without car insurance b/c I got a ticket for it once when I just didnt have my proof of insurance with me, but it was a pretty small fine, is that the only legal consequence of it? I'm a pretty good driver, no accidents so far (knock on wood), and if I were to get into an accident it would probably not be my fault. Is it true if you get in a car accident without car insurance and its not your fault then you are still financially responsible for the damages to your car? ...Like because you dont have insurance the other drivers insurance doesnt acknowledge the accident or something? Anyway, as of 10 min from now my insurance policy will expire and im tempted to not get new insurance for a month or so until im more financially stable. What are the consequences im missing? Anyone know of really cheap insurance? other thoughts?
BTW im still paying down the last couple thousand dollars on my car so I think i may be required to have full coverage insurance or I default on my loan, but im not sure. My loan is through a credit union, what may be the consequences if they find out?

depends on the state... in cali its a $1000 dollar fine so... check with your state. yeah if you owe money on the car to a credit union and dont maintain insurance they can and will repo the car...eventually

The loan is the least of your worries. If you should happen to gravely injure someone in an accident, the hospital bills will break you for life! Your vehicle can be impounded, your license revoked and your future ruined. Not to mention the damage to other people you may cause. If you can't afford insurance, take the bus and save up some money. The risk isn't worth the possible outcome.

Driving without insurance is not a small fine. Your license can be suspended which will result in much higher insurance premiums in the end. Why risk it? If you can't afford insurance then you can't afford to drive. Stating that an accident "probably" won't be your fault shows how immature and irresponsible you are. You don't need to be behind a wheel. As soon as your policy lapses, proof is sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles and your finance institution. The DMV can suspend your registration. If your registration is suspended you cannot legally drive the vehicle on the road. Once your finance institution finds out you do not have comprehensive or collision coverage they will force their own insurance to protect their interest. It's a lot more expensive than getting your own insurance. There are soooo many consequences to your negligent actions. Too many to list. Either pay insurance or don't drive. Don't risk the lives of the millions of other drivers on the road just because you're not financially responsible.

just keep the insurance. the results of not having it are bad for you and whomever you might encounter. and my understanding is that if you are involved in an accident and don't have insurance, pretty much everything is your fault and everyone is screwed.

The place your car is financed thru can let you know what type of coverage you have to have. Most likely its full coverage, however I once bought an older can and only had to have liability on it. If caught without insurance you will most likely lose your privilage to drive for a minimum of 90 days. If in an accident you will be faulted even if its not your fault. There are many cheaper insurance agencies out there, Ive found that the general is the cheapest on the vehicle I used to have. But many times people go with safe auto.
check around and see who is the cheapest for your car but whatevr you do dont go without it, even good drivers make mistakes. Also if you happen to run into a road check they will ask for proof of insurance, your better off safe than sorry.
Also if the company that is financing your car finds out you dont have insurance they have the right to repo your car no questions asked.

you need to renew - i have been hit twice by uninsured driver and the bottom line is i got jacked and they got away - i had insurance so i had to pay a deductible but they were at fault in both occasions.

so i had to pay 1g deductible b/c they didn't pay 50 dollars or less a month.

renew your insurance so you aren't one of the many good for nothings ( i could have used other words) in our world.

get basic coverage if you have to -which you probably do if you still owe on your car - but make you are insured.
