Driving without insurance?

hi, i live in california. I dont have any insurance. i hit a car in park and he didnt even checked it because he said to busy and he need to go to music award, so i give him my phone number. The car i hit has minor scratch. i said to him i will pay for the damage. 2 days later, he called me and said that he just go to the dealer and the car's repairment is $1200. I really confused cause the car i hit is just one or two scratch, but if i refused to pay, i worried about got fined, jail and etc since i dont have insurance. i need some advice.

ok, it s not that i dont want to pay, but it s just a srecth and it wont cost 1200, and btw i have legal ID.

You broke the law and took a risk by driving without insurance. You hit another vehicle. You are not in a position to bargain with anybody. Are you an experienced body repairman? No? Then you are not qualified to assess damages to a vehicle. Ask the person you hit to get a couple of written estimates from body shops, don't just take their word for it. Then pay them. If it was me you hit, I'd have called the police and you'd be dealing with them as well.

tell him you want two estimates...that's what insurance companies do. pick the lesser of the two!

How dare you drive without INSURANCE !!!! You should of got his name and taken your body man do the estimate. Owning a garage you I know how much parts and PAINT particular --it is unreal. It could easily be $1200 to fix, but still have someone for you make an estimate.

Make a police report anyway to stay in the clear . It's better than being charged with a hit & run later .

Any thing to keep him from reporting it as a hit and run will be your best way, and who_me is right, you need to make a police report to keep him from really messing you over. You should have taken pictures of the damage to his car so that you would not have to fix other damages, as it sound like you are.

hmmm...go to a car repair/hardware place and ask one of the workers about how much it would cost to fix it. ask them to write a report stating if it is cheaper and have them sign their signature and put their phone number....that's the best i could do. im a girl. i don't know much about these types of things. lol

Mistakes cost money.
Put your mind at ease,get your self an insurance policy,Maintane it and be carefull.

OK, if it's a BUMPER scratch, you can't fix those plastic bumper covers, they have to be REPLACED. Plus, you have to pay for the rental while it's being fixed. $1200 is NOT unreasonable.

So, you're going to be responsible one way or the other. Either cough up, or get hauled into court & cough up more.

Don't pay it. Sounds like he's taking you for your money. Sounds like all he needed was to have the scratch buffed out. You should have taken pics of the damage. Sounds like he wants you to pay for a new bumper or something. Have the dealer itemize the damage and cost then decide to pay it or not. I wouldn't do it and I live in Cali
