Driving without insurance in the UK, with an International license - what will happen?
|
I drove my car without realising it was out of insurance. cancelled due to cancelled payment.I'm on debt management program,my wife had a new baby, new job for me so things are over my haed past 2 months and like a fool i never thought of the insurance is out of date.Im not giving an excuse but i admit its my foolish mistake.I was stopped by the police and they have taken my details but didint impound the car but he said he will get in touch.I got insurance cover reinstated the very next day and am not trying to avoid punishment for what i have done - just wondering what is likely to happen to me.he didnt call me yet.

This story is full of errors.
If the British police pull a motorist over, and he/she has no insurance, how come you were allowed to carry on driving the car to your destination? |

you should get what everyone else gets who drives with no insurance.6 points on your licence & a minimum £200 fine :-) |

From what you say it sounds like you've found a startlingly understanding policeman. Are you sure you've not missed something? |

Your story is full of holes, as a previous writer has said because;
1) If the Police stop an uninsured motorist they will impound the car. If they cannot do that because of an exceptional operational reason then they will never let you drive away in the car. If they did, they would be allowing you to commit offences, which they simply cannot do.
2) An International driving licence has no legal standing. You acquire a licence to drive in your country of residence and that allows you to drive in that Country.
If the licence is EU licence, you can then drive in any other EU Country.
Alternatively, any none EU VISITOR to the UK can drive in accordance with a licence acquired in the visitor’s country of residence. NB Visitor status ends as soon as you become a permanent UK resident.
You appear to be a UK resident so you need a UK licence.
Again, the Police would not allow an unlicensed driver to simply drive away.
I do not know if you are genuinely mixed up about what happened or if you are holding something back but for the above reasons your account does not make sense.
If you do not hold a current driving licence or are disqualified the vast majority of insurance companies invalidate your insurance, so if you are still driving you need to be very careful.
I hope you have a genuine licence and not one of the bogus licences that you can buy on the Internet. The Police see these every day and they will check your status thoroughly.
If you have not explained all to us, there is more to the story, and you are simply uninsured expect 6-9 penalty points and a fine of around £300 for a first time offence. If you do not have a UK licence expect a much heavier fine.
The Police have not forgotten you. They cannot ignore offences. |

you'll probably go to the magistrates court and get at least three points and a couple hundred pounds fine.
how long have you been driving on the international licence as you have to have a test after a certain amount of time to keep driving in UK. |

fine and points. don't worry too much you have enough going on. Just try and sort things out after this and learn from it. |

you will be summonsed to court and depending on them you will probably be fined and collect 6 points on your license

it will be 6 points on your licence and a fine of about £250 ,but if you have been in England for over a year you should have taken a U K driving test ,so you could be looking at a possible ban |

my advice is that they do try and prosecute, but if they didnt impound the car, i am not sure they can do it now it is insured. You may be fined and get points, unless you can really plead your way out of it. |

MAYBE NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. BUT THAT AINT A VERY GOOD EXCUSE AS INSURANCE PEOPLE SEND REMINDERS THAT YOU NEED TO RENEW! IF YOU AY YOU FORGOT AND AS SOON AS YOU REALISED YOU INSURED YOUR CAR. WHY DID THE POLICE PULL YOU UP ANYWAYS? |

ull get notified soon |
|

Please punctuate properly folks.
 |
I am sure you will be banned, and there is no point NOT informing your insurers of this, they will be informed by the DVLA of the offence when you renew next time, they will get very miffed with you if you don't tell them about it, and may cancel insurance with you - this leaves you with far fewer companies who will deal with you, and at a much higher price, as you are a bad risk. It is also a criminal offence to not disclose the offence to them.
It will take five years of angelic behaviour to put this behind you. |
