Expired Tags and Using Tags off another vehicle?

My friend has Washington D.C tags that expired 1 year ago. She put tags from her exhusbands old car on hers. Her exhusbands tags are from out of state in Texas and they are also expired but they do not need stickers that immediately show this. How much trouble can she really get in.

Okay, I assume she is in D.C., driving around with a Texas plate. In Texas there is no sticker on the plate, you are correct there, but there is a sticker on the front windshield that gives the last 5 of the VIN for the vehicle it's assigned to and a month and year of expiration. So it the officer is savvy about Texas, it will be a reason to stop her.

Also, sometimes they run a rolling 10-28 (registration check) especially for an out-of-state license. When they do (and it will eventually happen) it will come back as expired to her ex-husbands car. So, since it's coming back to a 2003 Ford F-150 and she is driving her 2005 Buick, on go the red and blue lights.

After she pays the bail bondsman to get her out of jail, she will have to get proper plates for the car and current insurance before she goes to the towing company impound yard to pay the impound and storage fee and get her car back. Then there will be the court appearance for the ticket she got.

Believe me, it's far cheaper to put the right plates on the car.

arrested, lose license and massive fines - pay the car registration for your correct state already

She's really ridin' dirty, you better tell her to get new tags quick before she's caught. If not she will lose her license and have the car impounded!

She'll probably get a ticket and they might impound the car.

Cops have computer systems these days to check out-of-state tags right from their car. Better hope you don't get caught...

They have the right in most states to impound the car.
Thats all.
They usually do not see it until they stop you for some other reason.

You can get BIG fines for this. I've personally done this and been caught and it wasn't good. Cause not only are you driving with a tag that doesn't belong to that car but the car isn't up to date with the registration tag.

very illegal,it would be better to take a bus than take the chance,my sister moved to florida from mass and couldn't afford to switch the tags, her mass tags were still legal and she still got in troble

She can get in a carload of trouble. She needs to go to the motor vehicle department and get the correct tags. In some states she can be fined, and lose her drivers license. Some insurance companies will drop you for this type of violation.

They will find out because they get reports from the motor vehicle department.

She needs to get this corrected.

Basically she is trying to hide something in a police officer's eyes. Any time someone drives a vehicle that is not registered or not current it looks extremely suspicious. They don't care what your reason is. They just know that it is against the law. It is a very bad idea.
