Expired car license in apartment complex parking lot?

The last 2 cities I've lived in could fine you and/or have a vehicle towed if you had it on your property with expired inspection sticker or registration (tags), so I'm guessing it may not have been up to the apartment complex owners as far as towing your vehicle was concerned, although it would be to their advantage to avoid a fine and have it removed from the property.

When you go to renew your registration, be sure to tell them that the car has not been driven since the date you left the country. I don't know if the laws are the same everywhere, but where I live they will forgive those months and give you a current tag for the year starting on the date you renew. If they assume you've been driving the vehicle this entire time with expired license, they'll renew it from the actual date that it should have been renewed. Does that make sense?

I don't know what city you live in but i do know that my city has local ordinances that pertain to abandoned vehicles/inoperable vehicles. the complex owns the space, you simply rent it from them. Just like they own your apartment, right. You should have something in you lease pertaining to vehicle violations. An expired tag did render the vehicle inoperable. If the city tagged it and towed it away, the complex is fined for it. Someone has to pay the city for towing away derelicts etc. So the complex went ahead and towed it at your expense- The fact that you weren't driving the car is irrelevant. They had every right to remove it.

The city has no right to fine you for an immobile vehicle with expired tags because you are not driving it, But the complex may have rules about immobile vehicles and vehicles with expired tags. Review your lease terms regarding the parking lot and go talk to your Apartment Manager about the situation (which you probably should have done before you left). The apartment is private property and they can enforce any rules and regulations they see fit, and odds are you agreed to them when you signed the lease...

Yeah, the grace period for renewing your license is ANY TIME BEFORE EXPIRATION.

You can renew it anytime. It can expire in 5 years, and you can still renew it right now.

So being out of the country is a lame excuse. You knew you'd be gone, so you should have renewed it first.

If the car hasn't moved, they can consider it abandoned. In which case, they have every right to tow it. Paid spot or not.

If you have a lease take a look at it and see if there is anything pertaining to your situation. It might also be a good idea to consult an attorney that specializes in housing rules and laws.
