I was recently involved in a small accident which left a small scratch on the bumper of another car. Rather than going through insurance, we decided to try to settle privately. Now the other driver is asking for almost 900 dollars to cover repair and car rental, and a signed statement admitting fault. What should I do?

Thanks for the answers so far, I haven't admitted fault formally and don't intend to. Would still like to settle privately since my driving record isn't great. Any advice on how to settle this without getting screwed?

I would go through insurance, if you have a good record with them your premiums shouldn't go up too much. I would definitely not sign a statement admitting fault. |

Sounds like you better contact your insurance since you admitted fault.
Next thing you will know he will claim to be injured.

If you're going to admit fault anyway ... it won't hurt to go through your insurance company. |

Weigh the difference....
pay $900 to someone you feel is trying to screw you and may keep coming back and coming back. Plus having to pay the 900 in one lump sum or
use your insurance that you've been paying month after month, year after year and have your insurance go up less than what you'll have to pay out of pocket to this idiot.
You pay insurance for a reason, one just like this. Let them take care of this, have it over and done with. |

I have had this happen to me a few times and it was NEVER my fault.
I am a nice guy so I always meant to help them out and asked $100 or $200 for a few scratches on the bumber and have NEVER got anything.
So you do what you want but know that unless police was involved or this person has any DETERMINED witnesses, you can tell the guy to stop hassling you and that is it. |

It is always dangerous to settle on your own. Often after you have settled, the person will come back and say he found additional damage and will want more money or will develop back problems and will want even more money. I would advise you to report this to your insurance company and let them handle the matter. Your driving record shouldn't be affected, just your insurance record.
