Fines dished out for having no vehicle tax/insurance or mot?

Not only doubled,my friend, but quadrupled with confiscation and scrapping of the car concerned. It is the majority of idiots like me who make sure that all 3 are in place who are made to suffer by these parasites !

There's no question about it. No-one should be on the roads without them. Innocent people get hurt by such selfish rubbish.

To be honest, if anybody did not have all 3, then I would say that they should have an automatic custodial sentence.

They should confiscate any vehicle they have or get caught having without them & crush them in to a lil square & then shove the square up there ***, that would teach them not to drive like that again!

I totally agree. The present fine structure is too little, and does not deter violators. It's barely more than a slap on the wrists.

The fines are actually no deterrent at all for most persistent offenders, who quite often have more than enough money to pay.

A better idea is simply to take the car away and crush it, while the offender is watching.

Recently, the ex-footballer John Barnes got away with driving without insurance and was simply given a reprimand by the judge.

I entirely agree that if you can't afford the costs you shouldn't have a car.

BUT... It would be pointless increasing the fines as the ones who don't pay now still won't pay. They'll still just hope to get away with it.

An effective way to deal with this is:-

1. Don't give them the option of getting their car back, so they would have to buy another one. Any impounded car which has a residual value could be re-registered so that it's identity is changed and sold with the value being compensation for the insurance payouts to accident victims of uninsured drivers

2. Add the Road Tax to the cost of petrol with a suitable system of refunding those who are eligible for exempt tax.

Certainly need tackling but there are genuine instances where people forget. So draconian measures should be at the discretion of the courts. Not saying the forgetful should be let off, just not the hammer to crack a nut approach. The serial offenders need the hammer approach.

Also, how many people modify a car and invalidate the insurance or capability of the car? They may have the paper saying they are insured but the insurance company have not been notified, then refuse to pay out as the conditions have not been met? Another thing to tackle.
