First car wreck today.... help?

Okay, so here is the deal. I am going to apologize for how jumbled this info may be , because I am still shaky after this whole ordeal, so here goes.
I was in an accident today, my fault. I rear-ended a guy going about 2-3 mph... there was no damange to my car, but I dented the guys bumper a little (there was like a very small dent) and took some paint off... I honestly do not think there were any witnesses to this anyways, that is how low of an impact this wreck was.
So, we both stop, I call the police, and they come out. Well, while we are waiting I asked the guy if he was allright and he reassured me he was and that he was just shaky..
so the cops get there and they ask us if we are allright and the guy starts saying his chest hurts.. me being a nice person believes him, beacuse I know injuries can happen even in low impact wrecks.
Well the cop asks if he needs an ambulance and he says yes. Well, the ambulance gets there and they check us both out. The guy ends up going in the ambulance to the hospital after debating on whether he should go or not.
I was left with a ticket for "driving too fast for conditions", which the cop tells me is standard procedure, they have to issue a ticket to the person at fault in a wreck and he knows that I was not going to fast.
anyways, this being my first wreck ever, I am just wondering , what happens after a wreck?
I am 20 years old, driving a car my parents own, on my parents full coverage insurance policy, I have had my liscence for about a year and a half now and have never had a ticket or a wreck until this one.
so, how much do you think my insurance rates will go up?
Can this guy sue me?
Will I have to pay for anything out of pocket?
What exactly happens after a wreck?
Like I said, his car was totally fine, except for the dent and my car is fine.

this is why we pay high insurance rates..... people who make something out of nothing, the guy you hit started thinking about the money he can get.... you rates can go up, but they might not, you should have received an incident report, this must be filed with your insurance company, then they will contact you and you make a statement. This person can sue your insurance company, but you should be fine. You shouldn't have to pay any out of pocket expenses... This happened to me a few years ago, I was behind a couple in a parking lot, they stopped suddenly in front of me and I bumped into them. I jumped out of my car to see if they were ok, they started yelling at me telling me I shouldn't have hit them, blah, blah, blah, and about "young fokes" driving, etc, etc, so I went back to my car and called the Highway patrol, here's where it gets fun, the lady approached me saying really nasty things to me about how irresponsible I was, and continued to yell at me until the Highway patrol arrived, then she sits down in the parking lot and starts crying and holding her chest, she can't move her neck, etc. She need's an ambulance, and tells the HP that I wouldn't call an ambulance for her..... the same lady that was yelling at me just moments before. She leaves in the ambulance, I'm charged with careless op, just like you.... I'm contacted by my insurance company and of course, there's a ambulance bill, emergency room bill, and to top it off the estimated to repair the 1 inch mark on their bumper was around $10,000.00 . My insurance company handled everything and I never paid anything, and in this case my rates didn't go up either. But Good Luck with yours, just be honest about what happened. |

You shouldn't have to pay anything, unless the policy requires you to pay a deductible. If he sues, the insurance company will cover it.
You will lose points on your license, and there's no way to tell from this info how much your premium will increase. It depends how many claims were made before this, how much they pay out this time, and other things. |

First off accidents happen, that's why we have insurance. Let them take of this.
Call your insurance company and explain what happened. Your liability coverages will pay for the damages to the other car and for the other driver's injuries. As long as the other driver asks for less than your liability coverages, you will not be sued. You will not pay anything out of pocket for this.
For your car to be fixed by the insurance company, you need collision coverage. It is subject to a deductible which you will have to pay.
As far as your premiums, it really depends on several factors. You should plan on the rate going up somewhere around 33% when the policy renews. |
