The problem for discounts, however, is quality. Many ask is, "Is this cheap auto insurance worth buying? What kind of coverage do I have to sacrifice for a cheaper premium?" What is a small bi-yearly or yearly or monthly bill can become astonishingly high if you cheat on your deductible coverage or coverage amount. Medical isn't really the same thing as underinsured/uninsured. The underinsured and uninsured coverage helps in case someone who doesn't have insurance or who has little insurance hits you. If their insurance doesn't or can't pay for all of the damages, yours steps in.

No one really has answered your question correctly. I handle auto claims in the state of Florida for one of the largest insurance companies in America... handling everything from severe damage, fatalities, lawsuits, etc.

There is no uninsured motorist PROPERTY damage in Florida. So do not worry about that. Other states do offer this, but not Florida.

There is, however, the option of Uninsured Motorist coverage, stacked or non-stacked. A prior answer tried to break down UM into uninsured or UNDERinsured.... do not worry...this is only ONE type of coverage (it may just be applied a little different and I'll explain).

For instance, PIP (personal injury protection) is required. If you are in an automobile accident, your PIP coverage pays 80% of your medical bills up to $10,000 no matter who is at fault. YOUR pip is primary...this is STATE law and hence the term "no fault insurance." No fault refers to pip being primary and paying no matter the fault...nothing else. So... let's say some guy runs into you, hurts you and you have a broke arm and two broken legs. Not life threatning, but bad right? The arm requires ER surgery...how much do you think those bills will be? Over $20-60k, I promise....all depending on how bad it is. Anyways...your PIP is now exhausted. So who pays the rest? Well... the person who was at fault may have BODILY INJURY coverage...which could then help with your bills or offering pain and suffering or lost wages...but what if they didn't have insurance or they only had a $10k BI limit... so your $10k in PIP, their $10k in BI coverage... there is $40k left in bills? Now...your health carrier would pay for it. Ok so sure...the agent is PARTIALLY right that if you have medical insurance they will pay for it after the PIP and BI money... but.. UM would be or could be paying too. And remember.. UM can pay for lost wages and pain and suffering. Your MEDICAL insurance won't do that. So... in the above scenerario...if you had $100k in UM then it would pick up the balance of your medical bills and maybe give you another $5k for your lost wages for a month or two... and then maybe another $10-15k for pain and suffering of going through broken arms/legs.... TRUST ME....UM is DEFINATELY DEFINATELY worth buying. It is cheap coverage and really huge benefit IF something happens. Ok...hope that helps

That is not correct. Uninsured Motorist carries 2 coverages: Property damage (damage to your car) and bodily damage (physical damage to you/passengers). Your medical insurance can only cover for your medical expenses, but not to damage of the car. So, it is always a good idea to have this coverage in your policy. Also, this coverage is very very cheap, so it won't increase your premium a lot.

Personally, I feel UM/UIM coverage is always good to have, and it usually does not cost much to have it added to the policy.

UM- Uninsured Motorist- Will help pay for your medical bills and pain and suffering if you are injured in an accident and the at fault driver does not have any insurance

UIM- UNDER Insured Motorist coverage Will help pay for your medical bills and pain and suffering if you are injured in an accident and the at fault driver DOES have insurance, but does not have enough to cover all of your medical bills.

In short, I'd rather have "too much" coverage, than not enough.
