Forgot to register car. what are the penalties? any grace period?

I totally forgot to register my car which was due in November. I havent used my car since then. Im from New Jersey. Is there any penalty? Or is there a grace period for late registrations? thanks for all your replies.

In Texas as long as you haven't driven it there is no penalty. ;-)

An example would be if it were being repaired etc.

i'm here in jersey and got my registration renewed on friday even though it was due at the end of august. i paid the same $46.50 as i would have in august. there was no fine and no special requirement. the only thing that will get you in trouble is driving the car. just don't move it (you could get a ticket and get towed) and just go to the dmv and renew it. you'll have no issues at all.

That's up to the state. Normally there is no grace period. They're going to hit you up for the penalty fee for late registration if it's not done by the deadline.

There is no grace period. Once it's expired, it's expired. Some states will allow 30 days to go by without charging a penalty (Oklahoma for example), but I don't know about NJ. Count yourself lucky you haven't been stopped and ticketed, and get it done. If there is a penalty, it probably won't be much.

Just go to your local DMV or local notary service and apply for new registration. Bring old registration card/info with you.

the penalties vary from state to state, but every state that i know of has a 30 day grace period

The most expensive part about not registering a vehicle (or renewing a registratiion) is the ticket you 'might get' should a cop pull you over. The penalties you will have to pay for registering late may sound like a lot (additional 10 to 15% of registration fee) they really aren't that much. Since registration fees for most vehicles are about 40 to 60 dollars even the max 15% on the max fee ($60) is only an additional $9.

I suggest you make the trip to the DMV as soon as possible, pay the cost and fees and be done with it. As I said earlier the cost of the ticket will be MUCH more expensive. Some states (Texas where I live for example) will waive the extra late fee IF 1) you haven't driven the car since the tags expired and 2) you haven't gotten a ticket for expired tags.
