I have a '56 Beetle that I bought about a year ago with no title, just a bill of sale. The last owner died nearly 40 years so there was no title. I currently live in Illinois but was a past Texas resident. Would it be possible to write up a bill of sale, selling the car to my sister who lives in Texas, and then buy it back from her without ever taking the car back to Texas? Here in illinois a bonded title doesnt mean **** without signatures from the guy I bought it from who is MIA, or I have to pay 1.5x the value of the car to get a bonded title.

Sounds like a lot of trouble to go through. It all amounts to the same thing. You have NO title for a 56 Beetle you purchased. The prior owner died 40 Years ago? Amazing! Who sold you the Car?
I know your torn.You want this car,BAD. But the only legal way is the Prior owner signature requesting a duplicate title from the State Of Texas. You will also need the dead prior owners drivers license. Sounds like your in a BIG pickle. How you going to do this? If you send for a duplicate,It would have to be mailed to the prior owners last known address. So, again: who sold you the car? Your right,the Bonding would cost you Way too much but just how bad do you want this car? It may be worth the effort and fee to get the Bonding Insurance policy. Call your Insurance broker.It may be cheaper then you think. Good Luck

Write the D.M.V. in Austin, Texas and apply for a lost title. If you call them, they will tell you what you need.
