Gieco has wrong VIN# for my truck....Now what?
|
I just realized a day or two ago that Gieco Ins. has the wrong VIN# on my policy for my truck. It has been this way ever since I bought it almost 2 years ago apparently. Im aware that should i have gotten in an accident or should i have caused any sort of damage to something/someone that Geico would not cover me at all due to the VIN being completely wrong. I have heard of people getting paid back the money they paid (and even having it applied as credit to them if they keep the insurance) but would like some input into this, since im pretty sure its going to be hell just to get them to accept it.
any help would be appreciated, thank you. Additional Details For some reason I don't think you're all understanding.
My problem isnt with picking up the phone and getting it changed, I want my money back for almost 2 years worth of insurance on a truck that WASNT insured.

Why would Gieco reimburse you for your error.???
YOU are the one required to supply them with the correct VIN for YOUR policy & vehicle.
You are at fault not them. |

It was a "good faith" error. Unless you're actually denied coverage, you can't ask for a refund. |

I had the same issue with Allstate. Oh no it wasn't as I called my agent he came by and fixed it no problem....See there is a good reason not to be a number but hey you saved 15%
Call them and be hard on them to get it right ASAP. They obviously screwed it up and they make it impossible for you to get ti fixed. Geico Run by lizards.... |

Assuming Geico wouldn't cover you if you had an accident is an awful big leap. You have been misinformed somewhere along the line.
During my career in claims I have handled many claims were the VIN wasn't correct after an accident was reported . Normally the mistake was 1 to 3 digits being typed wrong and in many of those cases the VIN still decoded out to the same type of Vehicle. With a little documentation it was easy to fix and coverage would be applied.
I don't imagine any insurance company going along with your plan. You are responsible for making sure all the info on the policy is correct. Nobody but people in the insurance business double checks the info, but it is still your responsibility.
I suggest that you notify GEICO of the correct VIN and let it go.
Good Luck with your plan but I think you are going to be disappointed. |

Call them and tell them your problem. I have dealt with Gieco for many years and have always been satisfied. Their customer service is top notch. |

We're so sorry you were inconvenienced.
That Geico clerk-typist should be executed.
What a poor assumption by Geico that they should expect you to get off your lazy tail and verify that the info was correct. .
Perhaps you should give up driving. After all, its' such an effort to clean snow off the windshield, look out for the other driver, and be concerned with such stuff as speed limits. |

It is your obligation to let the insurance company know the correct VIN # so the record can be corrected. If you are involved in an accident, along with vehicle type and color the adjuster would check VIN # to write an estimate. I do not see where you should get any kind of refund. Their response is that you would still be covered because you would be able to correct it by supplying the correct information. Every day you go forth knowing the wrong VIN # is there "you" are negligent in your duty. There is no free payday here. |

It should just take a phone call, as long as the vehicle information is the same it shouldn't matter anyways. They're not covering a particular vin number, they're covering a particular make and model of car with a particular engine, as long as that info is right there should be no question at all about it. |

Just call them & correct it. If something were to have happened before you realized the VIN was wrong (as long as the year, make & model were correct) then you should have been covered. Honest mistakes happen. I have been in this business long enough to know that. But, then again, I am an independent agent & can work with you better than a no agent/service center company can. If it was a completely different vehicle, then yes, they could have denied coverage because that is something you (or the inspection station when you got it inspected) should have noticed. Instead of cancelling the policy back 2 years, maybe they will go back the 2 years & correct the VIN. That way, if something were to show up (which can happen many month after the fact) or if you change companies & have to show proof of prior insurance, you would have had continuous insurance for the last 2 yrs. |

Your vehicle was insured. This happens many times where someone makes a mistake on a VIN. The vehicle was still insured and you are not going to get your money back.
If someone bought a car from you, and saw two years later that you made a mistake on the contract and the VIN was off would you refund them the full purchase price of the vehicle?? |

Well listen to this. I have a 30 yr old Mercedes with a shorter than usual VIN number. About once a year something or someone in Geico's system fills the missing spaces with XXX's I caught this happening twice before and had to call Geico to correct it. It so happened this year that the timing was the same as my vehicle registration renewal. I got a nasty letter from the DMV stating there was a hold on my renewal tags because I had no insurance. I found out later this was because the VIN # didn't. I called geico and sure enough XXX's at the end of the VIN again and this time there were even a couple numbers overwritten with XXX's. Geico said they would make the corrections and send proof to the DMV. At this point I just had to wait until the tags arrived. Meanwhile a ticket writer who seemingly combs my neighborhood for my car is writing me daily 50$ tickets for not having current registration tags. After waiting two weeks and still not getting any tags I made a trip to the DMV to see what the hold was. There they told me it was still on hold for lack of insurance. I called Geico again to figure out why. It turns out who ever fixed the XXX's added a random 2 to the VIN number. Again they said they would correct and resubmit to the DMV. Its been a week since then and still no tags. The current total in tickets I have received is over 400$. Is Geico in any way responsible for this mess? |
