it was a hit a run bit i managed to get all his information from the tag i took down except if he has insurance. how would i go about starting a claim against him? More importantly, how would i go about finding out if he has insurance so i can contact his already?

The best thing to do would be to file a claim on YOUR insuracne and let your insurance company "go to bat" for you.

You will first file a police report and report it to DMV. The DMV will sent him a letter stating he has a file against him for hit and run.
You wont actually find out wether or not he has insurance unless he comes forward and acknwoldges the report against him. However if he disregards the DMV letter his license can get suspended.

How was this a hit and run? Did his license and registration fall out of the car when he hit you? File a police report if this truly was a hit and run and then contact your insurance agent. |

How did you obtain their VIN #??
First, file a police report. The police may be able to run the license plate # and see who they are insured with.
Second, file a claim with your own insurance company. If you have collision coverage they can repair your vehicle. Then they will hunt down the other driver and their insurance company for you.
If your company is able to collect money back thru subrogation, any out of pocket expenses to you (deductible) will be reimbursed |

you cant find out by yourself, you have to give the info to the police as they have the authority to officialy request personal info from the DMV. |

You can't - but it doesn't matter, as technically, his insurance isn't required to take a claim from you.
What you do, is go ahead and file a suit against him in small claims court. If he has insurance, they'll show up. If he doesn't, you get the judgement against him, and try to collect directly. |

Get a lawyer...then call police to report it...also need to be checked out if you are hurt...i am assuming this is a car accident??your insurance company can get everything you need.....if the other insurance company tries to get ahold of you refer to either lawyer or your ins co...do not sign anything...don't say anything to them...tell them to call your co......used to be ins agent...good luck |
