HELP! I didnt have car insurance when I got a speeding ticket, I have questions, help!!!!?

Ok, so I got a speeding ticket on Saturday for 5 over, I haven’t gotten a ticket in almost 5 years, my driving record is almost perfect, I’m 25 years old. So, I haven’t been too sure about my car insurance, my dad was paying for a while, he stopped, so I made a couple payment and I moved and it just kind of disappeared, I know I’ve been very irresponsible and I will suffer any consequences I get. So I didn’t have proof of insurance when I got pulled over, the cop said it was fine, just bring it when I pay my ticket. So I’m fairly certain I didn’t have active insurance at that point, so I’m wondering now if I were to buy insurance right now and bring proof of it in, would I get in trouble for not having it at the time I got pulled over? It was just a citation? How much will my insurance rates go up for a 5 over? Let me know, thanks! PS. I live in Michigan

yeah just go ahead and buy some insurance and bring it into court. even if you have to explain the mix up between you and your dads payments they should let you off because you are at least showing good faith

My guess is that no matter how you handle this you will be paying some fines. In my state atleast, if you are pulled over without insurane, the only way to get rid of the ticket is to bring in your proof of insurance that shows that you were insured on the date of ticketing. Sorry charlie. GL

Since you were caught without insurance, you will suffer that penalty. Here in Ohio they take your license for 6 months plus a fine of around $125 on top of the fine of the ticket. Being just 5 over, I would guess in the $65 range. So right off you are at $200 in fines, and most likely no license.

If you show up with insurance purchased after the ticket date. This shows the judge you realized your error and corrected it. He might lower a fine, he might lower the suspension time of loss of license. Might.

But to show up in court still without insurance. He will give no care about what you say, he will give you the limits of the law, and even might take your license plates as well to ensure you cannot drive. They have started that in Ohio now as many were just still driving after their license were taken away.

Along with all this, since you got caught with no insurance. You most likely will have to go onto what is called a SR-22 insurance plan. This is around 40% higher than your normal insurance and they report to the state. If you miss one payment, they inform the state, the state comes and gets your license. Once on a SR-22 insurance plan, one must be squeaky clean for around 3-5 years before you get off it. So no more new cars or such till about 30 as your insurance rates will be your car payment price.

I've been down this road, I know it too well. Took me 8 yrs to get out from under it all. All I can say, have insurance walking in the court room, and pray you get a good judge.
