HELP ME UNDERSTAND MICHIGAN "NO FAULT" INSURANCE!!!?

So, I was involved in a car accident this afternoon on my way to pick up my kids from school. The other person was sited a ticket for failing to yield. I received nothing. They had full coverage on their vehicle and I only have PLPD. The side of my car is crunched in and I cant open my driver side door. ( it is a 2 door car too!) My father tells me that there isnt any point in going through the insurance seeing as how I only had PLPD, because Michigan is no fault. So what I dont get, is if they have full coverage on their vehicle and it was their fault, why dont they have to pay for the damages to my car?

"no fault" is a slang term for Personal Injury Protection coverage. (PIP). PIP is a bodily injury coverage that is used to pay for medical bills.
"no fault" does not mean you can go around hitting people and it's not your fault.
In general: in a no fault state, if you are in a wreck and get hurt - you file against your own policy for your injury. Your injury is paid for by your PIP coverage.
You can still file a claim against the other person's insurance for the damage to your car.

No fault is only for injuries, not property damage.
You should be able to make a claim against her insurance for your damage if they were deemed at fault. |
