HIT and RUN, have license plate.?

Someone hit me on the side, when I was driving a friend's van. the car that hit meleft inmediatly. other driver saw it and wrote the license plate. I would like to talk with the person, making him/her paid for the reparis without reporting to the police or insurance company. Is there any way I can find him with the place number, made and color of the vehicle?

thanks for all the answers, I don't want my friend involved in anything. that's why I want to resolved with the person that hit me. I think for him/her should be a better deal to pay the repairs than me reporting the hit and run to the police and my insurance company. The other question I have is: Even if i was driving my friend's van it is my insurance the one that matters. How about my friend insurance, how does it work?

you need to make friends with someone @ the DMV or someone who is a police officer and has access to a national database, if you aren't already. Explan the situation and how you don't want to go about this officially, but you woul dlike to talk to that person and ask them to pay up. The same thing happened to a friend and I, and luckily, our two best friends are police officers. We got all the info we needed, and decided to go with a police officer, though we settled things without actually having to realy see what our cop friend was going to do if he didn't comply.

You Should have REPORTED it RIGHT then and there. You need to report it now, with out a police report, your going to have a hard time. I am not sure how its going to go, seeing how it was not reported right then.

Don't. Repeat, do not try to talk to that person. It's a huge mistake. Likely, they have no insurance, or they wouldn't have run in the first place - possibly, they are a dangerous person. Heck, the car could have been stolen.

You cannot find out the information - it's private. But your insurance company can, and the police department can.

File the police report. Have it reported to your friend's insurance company. Neither of them, by law, can release owner or contact information to you.

Don't try to handle this on your own person to person. Go to the police and file a Hit and Run Report. You will be so glad you did. If you try to go at it person to person, you'll likely end up going nowhere. It won't take much of your time and you'll get a lot further using the police then you will on your own.

Are you stupid? Call the police and turn the hit and run driver in! They left because they don't have a license or don't have insurance, or both. Let the cops deal with them.

DUDE THAT license plate number is useless!!! unless you give it to the police!!!
