UK ANSWER
I've been driving for 32yrs and do prefer autos. Be aware that if you pass your test in an auomatic, you can only drive automatics, pass in a manual and you can drive both. |

I'm assuming you're UK.
I've taught automatic for several years. It's a revelation for pupils who are slightly nervous or who simply don't get on with manual gears - and there are plenty of those!
The test is identical to a manual test except you don't need to worry about gear changes/clutch control and the like, so don't regard it as a quick way to pass - you can fail just as easily in an auto as you can in a manual. The advantage is you spend less time worrying about what's going on 'in' the car and more time concentrating on what's happening on the road.
There are few downsides these days as so many cars are sold as autos. However, if you are likely to regularly borrow a friend's manual car or hire a van, you might be better off with a manual. |

This must be a European question. In the U.S. the transmission of your driving test vehicle doesn't matter. |

You sound as though you just discovered the automatic transmission or something. I took my driving test in a Ford Country Squire station wagon, back in 1975. They even had automatics way back then. |

Many states require test to be taken with an automatic transmission. |

I took mine with an automatic. It's alot easier, no gears to grind ( HA ) & no roll-back on hill stops. Passed first time !
