Have a question for all those knowledgeable about cars, insurance, etc.? Is this true?

Is it true that two door vehicles are more costly, insurance wise, than four door vehicles? I ask because I am considering purchasing a certain vehicle; however, i'd rather have the coupe than the sedan. Someone told me that any vehicle with two doors is considered a sports car, and therefore, more costly to insure, than a sedan would be. Is this true? Or does it just depend on the car?

In many cases this is true, because the insurance company considers the 2 door to be a sporty car, and the 4 door to be a "family" type vehicle!

The best thing to do is to check with your insurance agent and ask them about the specific vehicle(s) you are considering!

Not considered a sports car by any means, but it is considered sportier. 2-door cars are generally rated in slightly higher ratings groups than otherwise-identical 4 door cars, so are a little more to insure. In my case, my 2 door is about $40 a year more than the same 4 door, but the exact difference depends on the make and model.

Every car is rated upon it's own merits and claims data/history. Surely you can't believe a two door Geo Metro would be rated the same as a Ford Mustang. Historically speaking, people that buy Corvettes or Mustang GT's drive them faster and are subject to much more risk than say a person that drives a Kia Rio.

That is mostly true. The construction of a 2-door car is not quite as strong in impact testing as a 4 door. The extra frame support the door rails give midframe makes a difference.

If it is the same model, just the difference between 2 dr or 4 dr, generally the 2 dr model is a little more to insure. Each vehicle year make & model in the US is assigned a rating symbol which helps to determine the comprehensive & collision rates. (other factors contribute too, age, record, etc). There is normally only 1 symbol difference between a 2 dr & a 4 dr which is equivalent to about 1 model year difference. Call your agent for quotes for the 2 vehicles.

Keep in mind also the newer your car is the more it may cost. My husband and I pay more now for car insurance with an 07 VW Jetta 4 door than we did for an 00 Chevy Camero 2 door with T-Top by about $50.
